The two-part tie in Venom War: Spider-Man wraps up this week, and judging by the first issue, we’re in good hands. Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly write a great Spider-Man while bringing in a unique Venom symbiote who needs his help. Throw in the chaotic Jackpot, and our heroes face an unstoppable force. We should have a rollicking good finale, right?
Venom War: Spider-Man #2 opens with Jackpot and Spider-Man getting chased by a primordial Arachniote. It’s just another day for Peter Parker and MJ, but Venom makes it clear this is not a threat they should take lightly. The issue focuses on MJ trying to use her Jackpot powers to get Sonics going while Venom can’t get over Peter’s feelings for MJ still being there, and yet they are friends.
Somewhat surprisingly, the origin of the Arachniote is one of the more compelling elements. It’s a new idea about symbiote that shows we don’t know everything about the species.
The stakes feel quite high, especially when MJ needs Spider-Man’s help to take the safety of her powers. Those powers were created by Paul, who ends up popping in to help MJ out. This leads to a funny moment where Spider-Man explains to Venom who Paul is, which is just one good bit of dialogue throughout.
As far as Jackpot, let’s be honest, it’s a silly superhero idea. MJ’s bright hopefulness shines through, but it’s a goofy power that doesn’t make a ton of sense. While MJ is soaring through the air or falling many stories, her powers are set to one ability between spins, so how is she not dying? She’s not invulnerable! I know, it’s a nitpicky thing with superhero comics, but it’s a goofy ability that doesn’t add up.
The writing team has a great handle on Peter and Venom’s voices, making you wish we had a whole series of them. I particularly liked how they have Peter call Venom different pet names. These two are finally getting along, and it’s nice to see!
Greg Land’s art is dynamic as always, even if the usual gasping facial expression or Spidey pose is seen here and there. The Arachniote gets an epic full page splash at one point, and a double page splash detailing its origin is quite pretty as panels peel out of Peter’s head.
Another good issue, Venom War: Spider-Man #2 makes me want Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly on Amazing Spider-Man, stat! They understand Peter’s quippy and heroic nature while delivering big action moments and good stakes.
