In the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of comics, few figures embody both tradition and innovation quite like Bixie Mathieu. As the lead editor for IDW’s My Little Pony comics and associate editor for the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Mathieu has a unique talent for bridging generational legacies with bold new ideas.
Mathieu’s journey as an editor is anything but ordinary. From navigating the storied halls of DC Comics to embracing the grassroots creativity of webcomics at Tapas, Mathieu has forged a career built on passion, collaboration, and an unwavering belief in the power of storytelling. This is a story of how a lifelong comics fan turned her dreams into a trailblazing career, redefining what it means to be an editor in the modern comics landscape.
From Libraries to Editorial Boards
“I’ve always adored comics, since I was a little girl wandering around my local library trying to find every graphic novel I could get my hands on,” Mathieu recalls. Her love for the medium began with fervent library trips and doodling comics in the margins of her notebooks. These small beginnings grew into a deep commitment, first as an editor for her college newspaper’s comics page and later through internships that opened doors to the professional world.
Mathieu’s big break came when she joined DC Comics just weeks before the global pandemic. “It was a jump into the deep end,” she says, describing her transition from small-time editing to working at one of the industry’s biggest players. At DC, she honed her skills under the mentorship of seasoned professionals and developed a foundation rooted in passion and discipline. “Getting the chance to work with my beloved DC characters will always be a shining moment in my life.”
After DC, Mathieu’s path took her to Tapas, a platform revolutionizing comics through web-based storytelling. “Working there also served as a reminder of people’s grassroots passion for creating stories,” she reflects.
Skybound followed, where she learned the art of large-scale launches like the Energon Universe, a thrilling project kept under wraps until its debut. These experiences culminated in her current role at IDW, where Mathieu continues to grow as an editor.
Balancing Legacy and Innovation
Mathieu’s editorial work at IDW often revolves around balancing the rich histories of beloved franchises with the need for fresh, engaging stories. “With licensed comics, you’re building on years and years of lore, character growth, design choices, and storylines,” she explains. This intricate balance requires an intimate understanding of the characters and their worlds—a challenge Mathieu meets with enthusiasm.
In her work on My Little Pony, she draws inspiration from the golden age of children’s media. “From Avatar: The Last Airbender to She-Ra: Princesses of Power, traditionally ‘kids’ media’ has proven its ability to tell amazing, heartfelt, and complicated stories,” she notes. For Mathieu, capturing the essence of My Little Pony means crafting stories that appeal to both younger readers and longtime fans. “At its core, why does it work? Once you wrap your head around that, you can start growing stories that strengthen the world while keeping the heart of the story pure.”
Her favorite character to work with? Izzy, whose “silly, over-the-top antics and chaotic tendencies” bring infectious energy to the comics.
On the Sonic the Hedgehog side, Mathieu is equally enthusiastic. The passionate Sonic fanbase keeps her grounded and inspired. “Our writers and artists are deep in the Sonic lore,” she says. “From that place of trust, it’s easy to work with our team and bring their creative vision to life.” She teases exciting developments on the horizon, including a “particular crossover” and “one-shots spotlighting darling characters.”
A Vision for Comics’ Future
Mathieu is invested in the future of comics as a medium, calling for greater diversity and experimentation.
“The comics industry needs evolving,” she asserts. “I would like the industry to continue pushing out really cool, really weird stories in the spirit of experimentation!” For Mathieu, comics are the perfect testing ground for bold new ideas, and she champions stories that reflect the broad spectrum of readers.
The Heart of an Editor
Behind the polished titles and creative storytelling lies Mathieu’s simple yet powerful philosophy: “Conversation.” For her, the key to great storytelling is collaboration. “At the end of the day, everyone is entering the comic-making process with the best of intentions and everyone deserves to be heard out.”
Her advice to aspiring editors? “Have fun!” she says. “Comics should be fun and exciting, even if it takes some reminding.” It’s a sentiment that encapsulates Mathieu’s approach to her craft—a balance of professionalism and joy, rooted in a lifelong love for the medium.
Dreaming Big
While Mathieu is deeply immersed in My Little Pony and Sonic the Hedgehog, her aspirations extend to new frontiers. She dreams of working on a Fallout or Twilight comic series, where she could bring her character-driven approach and penchant for period pieces to entirely different worlds.
Bixie Mathieu’s journey from a young comic enthusiast to a trailblazing editor is a testament to the power of storytelling and collaboration. As she continues to shape the worlds of My Little Pony and Sonic the Hedgehog, fans can look forward to comics that honor beloved legacies while forging bold new paths.
