The Green Lantern Corps picks up from the fallout of the Civil Corps and continues the mystery of the Fractal Lanterns. During the Civil Corps story arc, Mogo was turned into a Red Lantern and destroyed the planet Thanagar. In this issue, the creative team of Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, and Fernando Pasarin takes us back to explore what remains. With this journey, there are guest stars, and one you met in the last issue, Shayera aka Hawkwoman, will be accompanying and this will make for some tense moments for John Stewart. What will they discover at the center of Thanagar, and why does Atrocitus want it?

As I mentioned in my review of Green Lantern Corps #1, I am glad to see an expansion of the line, as there are so many Green Lanterns. Then, there is the extension of the Emotional Spectrum of different-colored lanterns, which has many characters and voices to get around to for the story. Writers Adams and Hampton continue to give plenty of side discussions to allow character showcases, but I wonder if they will become plot points for later. One that was great to read was the interaction between Kilowog and Razer; I liked it because both characters used different parts of the Spectrum, which gives readers an insider perspective on what it takes to use the rings. Bringing in Hawkwoman and Razer gives some fun synergy between the comics and animated shows.

The script also expands to examine another group of characters, the Red Lanterns. Seeing how other Corps of the Spectrum deal with the Batter Power issues is nice. They have come up with a wild way to channel energy, and having the Red Lanterns around gives artist Fernando Pasarin a chance to show off some fighting scenes, which he does wonderfully. The constructs Pasarin creates for his characters work and play nicely to the personalities. It’s interesting to see that both the Green and Red Lanterns will check out Thanagar, and there is quite a prize waiting in the center of the dead planet. I got a little laugh when I saw that the prize was egg-shaped from a planet of “bird people.” I am glad for the mystery as that will bring me back for more, with this issue being a quick read.
It’s great to have an expanded stage for all the happenings in the world of Green Lantern. John Stewart gets to shine as Hawkwoman advances, yet the Red Lanterns will get in the way as they explore other potential power sources. It will be very interesting to see how items from Thanagar interact with the Emotional Spectrum. Razer makes an appearance, which is great for his fans, but another character’s appearance shows that correct timing might not be in the shared story between this and the main Green Lantern series.
