Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are officially returning to comics in a major way, thanks to a new partnership between Dynamite Entertainment and Disney’s 20th Television. This relaunch kicks off a bold new chapter for the beloved franchise, and it’s being led by none other than Eisner Award-winner Kelly Thompson, who will write both interconnected series.
Known for her acclaimed work on titles like Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Birds of Prey, and Deadpool, Thompson is bringing her signature mix of heart, humor, and action to Sunnydale and Los Angeles. The Buffy and Angel comics will function as companion series, offering longtime fans fresh twists while also serving as a new jumping-on point for readers discovering the universe for the first time. The books will feature covers from superstar artist David Nakayama.
“Buffy was the first heroine that truly resonated with me,” Thompson shared. “That blend of horror, fantasy, and comedy, with a flawed but noble heart at the center, felt like it was made for me. Buffy and Angel’s stories have never stopped being relevant—and I’m thrilled to add to that legacy.”
Editor Nate Cosby echoed the excitement, saying, “Kelly Thompson was the only name on my list for both Buffy and Angel. Her vision for these characters is going to blow fans away.”
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show ran from 1997 to 2003, chronicling Buffy’s high school years as she battled vampires, demons, and the Hellmouth itself. Angel, a spinoff featuring Buffy’s vampire ex navigating his own path to redemption in L.A., also became a fan-favorite series across TV and comics.
“Buffy is one of the most iconic shows of its era,” said Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite. “Its mix of horror, fantasy, humor, and empowering characters is a perfect fit for comics—and we’re thrilled to bring both Buffy and Angel back to the page.”
More information on variant covers, release dates, and additional creative team members will be revealed soon. Stay tuned to Dynamite’s channels and AIPT for updates.
