Meet the new ‘Scrubs’ surgical interns: Layla Mohammadi and Amanda Morrow on keeping things fresh and familiar

Scrubs stars Layla Mohammadi and Amanda Morrow talk their characters, their experiences, and what fans can expect this season of Scrubs.

The Scrubs revival is set to arrive this week allowing us to catch up with J.D., Turk, Elliot, and many of the old gang at Sacred Heart. With the passage of time since the series first left the air comes a new batch of medical interns. Recently, we spoke with actors Layla Mohammadi and Amanda Morrow who play surgical interns Amara and Dashana respectively. The pair talked about their characters, their experiences, and what fans can expect this season.

Morrow drew inspiration from one of the legacy cast for Dashana. “She is so confident, so cocky,” Morrow said. “She’s known as being the young female Turk which I loved so much because getting to be inspired by/portray Donald Faison and Dr. Turk is just extraordinary. But she’s also an incredibly loyal friend and goes to bat for anybody that she cares about.”

On the other hand, Amara comes from a completely different background. Mohammadi shared, “She is someone who grew up home schooled and very sheltered and hasn’t experienced much life outside of things she’s learned in a textbook or online. You kind of get to watch her try a lot of new things which is been a lot of fun to come.”

Both actors found being on set for Scrubs a bit surreal. Mohammadi was a big fan of the original and recently rewatched the show. She said, “I was binging it constantly when we were filming and that was the most insane experience to be watching the show and then walking into Sacred Heart.”

Similarly, Morrow was excited to be a part of a series with such a history and working with the original actors. “Being able to see those iconic moments play out and to see those iconic relationships play out right in front of my eyes, and to be a part of that is huge.”

Morrow isn’t completely stuck in the past and feels the revival is able to separate itself while staying true to the franchise. “It feels fresh yet familiar. Fresh in the updated terminology. The technology. The way behavior is talked about. Mental health.”

She continued, “We have Vanessa Bayer who plays Sibby, who is our wellness program director and having an emphasis on mental health especially for folks in the medical field and knowing that that is a resource in a hospital and having that resource be amplified by her presence but through a comedic lens is very fun because I think OG fans will be able to see that fact that we have these new batch of interns but at the same time we still have the same familiarity in the field of the show.”

Mohammadi is looking forward for fans to catch the Scrubs revival. She said, “I’m excited for them to see all the fun fantasy sequences, all the fun relationships unfold, and the craziness that happens throughout the season. I think people will be pleasantly surprised.”

Scrubs premieres Wednesday, February 25, on ABC.
