The long-running neo-noir saga Palomino is gearing up for its final act, and AIPT has an exclusive preview of what’s to come. Created by Stephan Franck, the series returns this spring on Kickstarter with Palomino Vol. 6, bringing a decades-spanning mystery to a close.
Franck, whose past work includes animation and comics tied to major properties like Spider-Man and The Iron Giant, has treated Palomino as a deeply personal project from the start. He describes it as rooted in his own experiences, combining a love of Los Angeles noir with the now-faded culture of California honky-tonk clubs. The result is a story that feels lived-in, one that draws from real places, music, and memories while building a crime narrative that stretches across generations.
The series begins in 1981 Los Angeles, following Eddie Lang, a former Burbank PD detective balancing life in a house band, private investigation work, and raising his daughter Liz. Their relationship sits at the center of the story, shaped by humor, shared grit, and a past that continues to cast a long shadow. A case that hits too close to home sends both characters down dangerous paths, setting up a mystery that lingers for years.
By 1995, Liz has grown into a reporter, but the past is far from settled. A new assignment reopens old wounds, pulling her back into the unresolved case that defined her life. What follows is a final push toward the truth, where long-buried secrets surface and every decision carries weight. Franck leans into noir tradition here, focusing on characters who cannot walk away, even when it costs them everything.
That focus on obsession and family ties has been a throughline across Franck’s work. He points out that while Palomino differs from his earlier vampire series Silver, both stories share a core interest in characters driven by a need for justice or closure. In this case, that drive fuels a grounded crime story that blends Western imagery, music culture, and classic noir storytelling.
With Palomino Vol. 6, Franck is closing the book on a story that has explored Los Angeles from a unique angle, spotlighting a slice of its history that rarely gets attention. If this preview is any indication, the final chapter aims to deliver both resolution and reflection, bringing the series full circle in a way that stays true to its roots.
