To celebrate the summer’s soccer frenzy, Marvel is sending its heroes onto the pitch with Marvel Soccer Variant Covers, the latest monthly showcase from the Stormbreakers program. The covers started popping up in last month’s solicits, but today Marvel has officially explained the them.
Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, and more trade their usual looks for custom jerseys as they chase goals, pull off clutch saves, and, in Deadpool’s case, get into it with the referee. Spanning eight upcoming titles, the covers capture fast-paced action with an energy that practically jumps off the page.
The current class of Marvel Stormbreakers includes Alessandro Cappuccio (Ultimate Wolverine), Netho Diaz (X-Men), Simone Di Meo (X-Men of Apocalypse), Juan Frigeri (Ultimates), Gurihiru (Jeff the Land Shark), Jonas Scharf (Ultimate Endgame), Geoff Shaw (Wade Wilson: Deadpool), and Luciano Vecchio (Uncanny X-Men). Each artist was selected for standout work, creative vision, and a strong ability to bring Marvel’s characters to life in bold and inventive ways. Together, they point toward where comic book art is headed next.
The Stormbreakers initiative began in 2020 as the evolution of Marvel’s Young Guns program. Over the past 15 years, Marvel has spotlighted 36 rising artists who later shaped major events and flagship series. Alumni include Steve McNiven, Jim Cheung, Sara Pichelli, Ryan Stegman, and others who have become key voices in the industry.
