Last week, Patricia’s encounter with the Boogeyman of Widow’s Bay indicated that the curse wasn’t over as first thought. Now, Loftis, Wyck, and Patricia need to find the last descendants of Richard Warren. They need to find them quickly since a massive storm is about to hit the island.
The impending storm helps raise the anxiety and urgency of the episode. It creates an informal timer for the characters to accomplish their tasks while also prepping for the potential natural disaster. In addition, it helps increase the tension knowing a big event is on the horizon. The titular emergency shelter only adds to the strain constraining so many people in such a tight space. The episode does a good job setting the mood and building the anticipation heading into the finale.
The process leading to who is the last Warren descendant of Widow’s Bay is a painful watch as if the series is purposely trolling both the protagonists and the viewer. The genealogy segment forces the humor with Rosemary’s attitude and less than amusing commentary. The frustration and aggravation are tangible as you hope she gets to the point sooner rather than later.
The reveal itself leads to a different kind of horror for the show. It’s no longer supernatural or curse related scare, but a darker look into what a person is capable of. The target is a sweet, unassuming person that might not have that much longer to live. Philosophical and ethical questions are raised whether to wait and let nature take its course, or to take matters into their own hand for the greater good of the community.
On a smaller scale, its good to see Bechir more involved in the story as of late. As the sheriff, he’s been more on the periphery most of the season serving as a voice of reason who isn’t caught up with the history of Widow’s Bay. But now that he’s been let in on the secret, there is so much more for him at stake. That’s why he is receiving more screen time.
“Emergency Shelter” does its job help setting the mood and urgency for the finale, but the comedy is a slightly frustrating feeling forced and purposely drawn out.
