Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis reunite for a new ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ series

Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis are bringing the Bride of Frankenstein into the spotlight this October with a haunting new series that explores identity, memory, and what it means to truly live.

Today, Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, announced Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives, a new four-issue miniseries from Eisner Award-winning writer Kelly Thompson (Absolute Wonder Woman, Black Widow) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Mattia De Iulis (Absolute Wonder Woman, The Cull). The series was announced during the American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition and is set to debut just in time for Halloween, arriving in comic shops on October 28, 2026.

The series shifts the focus to one of horror’s most iconic yet often overlooked figures: the Bride herself. Rather than revisiting the tragedy of Frankenstein’s monster, Thompson’s story examines the Bride’s perspective as she grapples with her own existence, identity, and the women whose lives were taken to create her.

“The original Bride of Frankenstein is a brilliant film exploring the creature’s failed attempts to find friendship and community, and then the desperate act to force others to create that which he cannot find,” Thompson said. “What it’s not about, however, is how The Bride herself feels about her creation. Through The Bride of Frankenstein Lives we get the opportunity to explore her search for who and what she is, as well as her search for the women that were destroyed to create her, all brought to life through Mattia De Iluis’s incredible visuals.”

De Iulis said he immediately connected with Thompson’s approach.

“When I first read Kelly’s script, I knew right away this was going to be something special,” De Iulis said. “We’re finally giving the Bride center stage. She is no longer someone’s property; she is a person fighting for her own story. It’s an honor to bring that journey to the page.”

The official synopsis promises a gothic horror tale centered on self-discovery. Brought to life through stolen flesh, electricity, and desperation, the Bride awakens with no memory of her past and little understanding of what she has become. As danger closes in around her, she begins a journey to uncover her origins and determine what gives life meaning.

Skybound Editorial Director Alex Antone praised the creative team’s work, calling the series “the Bride story you’ve always wanted,” while highlighting Thompson’s script and De Iulis’s artwork as a powerful combination.

Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives marks the eighth series in Skybound’s acclaimed Universal Monsters line, following titles such as Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Phantom of the Opera, and the recently announced Blood of the Wolf Man. Skybound confirmed that additional Universal Monsters limited series are already in development, continuing the publisher’s strategy of pairing top comic creators with some of horror’s most enduring icons.

Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1 (of 4) (Lunar Codes Coming Soon | SRP: $4.99, unless otherwise noted) will be available at comic book shops and digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
