Daniel Warren Johnson is an idea machine, with some of the best graphic novels written and sometimes drawn by him coming out in the last few years. Today, Johnson revealed his new series, Chainkata, on X (formerly Twitter). Aside from the cover art, which you can see below, Johnson posted in all caps:
CHICKS. WITH CHAINSAWS. IN SPACE. CHAINKATA COMES TO YOUR LOCAL COMIC SHOP NOVEMBER 2026 WITH
@ImageComics (thanks to Mike Spicer for the colors on this cover!)
The title strongly suggests that a new style of martial arts will be revealed through choreographed routines (kata) performed with, in this case, a chainsaw. Kata typically uses traditional Wushu chain weapons, such as the nine-section whip or double-whip chains.

Few creators have defined the modern creator-owned comics landscape quite like Daniel Warren Johnson. Whether exploring the brutal post-apocalyptic mythology of Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, crafting a poignant cosmic epic in Beta Ray Bill, or delivering the Eisner Award-winning wrestling masterpiece Do A Powerbomb, Johnson has consistently combined kinetic artwork, emotional storytelling, and larger-than-life ideas into some of the medium’s most celebrated works.
If Chainkata is any indication, Johnson’s next obsession may be his wildest yet.
