Amazing Spider-Man #2 Review

Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, is on top of the world. Gone are the worries about paying the rent and getting enough dough to buy more web fluid. It’s the opposite now as he owns and runs his own global company which makes all kinds of devices that rival Apple and Google alike. His life still has problems though and with them the need to fight the bad guys (especially now that he’s working with S.H.I.E.L.D.). Is it good?

Amazing Spider-Man #2 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Last month a new supervillain group calling themselves Zodiac arrived and stole a device that will allow them to hack into the entire internet. Well, it’s not the internet per se, but it’s like it, as Parker Industries developed a free unlimited data World Wide Web. The problem is if they can hack it they have access to a lot of important passwords and files that should remain secret. Spider-Man and Prowler (Peter’s body guard) are on the case in this issue.

That’s pretty funny.

Why does this comic book matter?

Spinning out of Secret Wars is this series that pretty much picks up where it left off before the summer event. Only a few slight things have changed, the biggest being Parker Industries is alive and well. Everyone thinks Spider-Man works for Peter Parker and his technology is revered. The Parker luck appears to be back, as everything is peachy. If you loved the previous series you’re going to love this. Period.

Now if you’re new to the series there’s still a lot to love. Take for instance all the new gadgets. It appears writer Dan Slott is infusing every issue with new Spider gadgets to enjoy which makes the character a little bit more fun. Plus, seeing Peter running a global company allows us to see a new side of the character.

I suppose Apple made it through Secret Wars too.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

For starters, this issue is really funny. I laughed out loud three or so times with a chuckle here and there too. Slott is clearly firing on all cylinders in this regard with clever flashbacks, sight gags and nice quips to boot. I’m not sure I’ve laughed so hard at a Spider-Man comic in years.

Though all these gadgets makes Spider-Man less gritty it’s still a lot of fun. This issue introduces an underwater vehicle and a device that’s like an Apple Watch…but cheaper. It’s nice to see Peter’s intellect taking the forefront.

This issue introduces some new villains that are partly like Hydra, but also just as bumbling and dumb. It’s a fun introduction and it’s neat to see how their powers line up with the Zodiac signs. This issue is also a done-in-one tale with the heroes infiltrating a base, getting info and then getting out. That makes it easy to read for new readers too.

The art by Giuseppe Camuncoli continues to look great with some bombastic splash pages. I really love how he shows a flashback—with the edges a bit blurry and the color of the panels in a sepia tone. He also changes the game a bit with panels that are long that run the entire page. Basically they are the opposite of the cinematic wide frame, but they work well to show Spider-Man on a ceiling and bad guys unaware on the floor.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

New readers will be a bit lost in regards to an old friend Peter let die. It’s a moment that occurred over a year ago now and even devoted readers will have to wrack their brains to remember it.

Pew! Pew! Pew!

Is It Good?

This issue is a lot of fun with yet another Spider-Man gadget that brings on the fun side of the character. I haven’t laughed so hard at a Spider-Man comic in years.
