Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Halloween is approaching which means scary comics and scary comic book covers. Scroll down to see which artwork we chose this week, along with honorable mentions and some less desirables. Also look for a full list of this week’s releases at the bottom.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Debris #4

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Riley Rossmo

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Brendan: I love the layering done here. The intricate designs of the red machinery in the deepest layer are super cool and I love the silhouette of our weird machine man. The snowscape is simple but also beautiful. There is great depth on multiple levels.

Dave: Aside from looking pretty I’m not sure what this cover is trying to convey. So our heroine is inside the head of a mech monster that’s chasing her? Brendan’s point about layering fits in a sense. The cover is telling us two things with one image. I’m just not sure it’s clear in its purpose.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Artifacts #22

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Stjepan Sejic

Dave: This guy knows what he’s doing. Go to his DeviantArt page and you’ll see everything there is beautiful. His use of digital effects is impressive and they blend so seamlessly I’m not even sure where they end or begin. Those swords are practically real, the metal and gun have an incredible gloss to them and her expression is titillating. The floating cape at top right blends beautifully with the flames at the bottom too. Amazing work.

Brendan: I love the heat that comes from this cover. This guy is truly a master at what he does. The subtle shine on her armor and that alluring face make this cover for me. It’s just beautiful.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Unwritten #42

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Yuko Shimizu

Brendan: I love the way the fire is drawn as well as the ghostly ladies in the background. Overall this cover has a really cool, set tone and I am into it.

Dave: There’s a good contrast between good and evil here. The angelic butterflies mixed with the creepy ladies. The mountains at the top seem to be Japanese inspired which adds a calming nature to the cover.

Astonishing X-Men #55

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Phil Noto

Brendan: I think I like the concept more than I like the actual cover. It’s funny how often you forget that while the X-Men are supposedly this symbol for peace and equality, in reality they are simply a weapon. It’s an army of trained bio-monsters, ready to do what is needed for their cause. This cover summarizes that concept very well.

Dave: I interpret the cover a bit differently. Instead of the heroes being bullets I think it’s representing the X-Men as cannon fodder to be used up and destroyed. You’re right they are used as weapons, but at a sacrifice. I can’t pinpoint where I’ve seen this idea, but I know it’s been done before. That said, when covers use symbolism to convey a message that’s a win for smart minds.

Russ: I’m pretty sure this is where this cover draws its inspiration: a piece entitled, “Birth Machine,” by Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger. (The guy who designed the titular creatures from the Alien films.) A prevalent theme in his works is that of the interrelating of humans and machines in a bleak fashion — which would lend credence to the idea that the X-Men are living weapons.

Ghost #1 Variant

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Alex Ross

Shadow #6

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Alex Ross

Brendan: It’s time for some Alex Ross appreciation, you guys. These two covers are prime examples of why Mr. Ross gets paid to do what he does. The quality of work is outstanding here. Both covers are eerie, but for considerably different reasons. The Shadow cover goes for the straight for the shock value, while the Ghost cover leaves you with this sense of lonely hopelessness. Super cool stuff.

Dave: It’s nice to see Ross using only a few colors instead of his usual technicolor extravaganzas in Voltron. The shimmering effect of the Ghost cover works wonders in drawing you in and the torn face (Bane is that you?) on Shadow is gloriously gross. Good stuff.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Spawn #224

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Todd McFarlane

Dave: Todd McFarlane parodying Frank Miller. How awesome is this? The original was powerful for all the reasons this is powerful. The solid weight of the character taking up the entire page, the wrinkled and used look to the costume. Save for the lack of blood it’s a close interpretation.

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Brendan: Yay references! This is a really well done version of a classic cover. I’ve noticed McFarlane has been going to the ol’ reference bin quite a bit as of recent. Perhaps he’s running out of fresh ideas? Either way, as long as they continue to come out with such quality I won’t be complaining.

Grimm Fairy Tales Myths & Legends #21

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Ken Cha

Dave: This reminds me of Drew Barrymore in Firestarter and I love it. The burning broken up wood lends a sharp edge to the curvaceous woman that makes the relationship between to the two pop. The hair is like flames, the torn jeans look cool and I want to know whatever she’s doing with her hands. It’s going to make folks want to open the book for sure.

Brendan: I’m not crazy about this cover. There’s good action and the detail level is high, but I just can’t get over the awkward attempted depth or the over-the-top hair. It just doesn’t sit well with me.

All-Star Western #13

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Ariel Olivetti

Dave: There’s not much that scares Jonah Hex…except apparently clowns. What a freaky flipping clown! The wrinkles on its face, the balding head and the veiny neck add a lot to the scary nature to this clown. Hex’s reaction is priceless.

Brendan: I have never liked clowns, and this sure helps solidify that phobia. Are we looking at some western version of the Joker? He’s a total creep show.

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #4 (Variant)

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

Bruce Timm

Dave: Bruce Timm is the king at drawing sexy cartoon characters. Just look at this mummy:

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

That’s a flipping dead body and I’m drooling!

Not to mention how he can portray characters like Vampirella

:

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

I particularly like this Watchmen cover due to the use of the swirling background, the use of my two favorite colors in said background and the hip (do people say that anymore) pose Spectre is holding. The use of white on the costume to make it look plastic is also a keen touch most artists wouldn’t even think of doing. Great stuff.

Brendan: I will agree that Timm has his version of the female figure down. His Watchmen cover can only be described as “Groovy”, and you can interpret that as you wish. Overall, the cover feels a bit empty, as if Timm simply gussied up a sketch and handed it over to DC.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Batman: The Dark Knight #13

Comic Book Preview: 10/24/12

David Finch

Dave: Batman versus wood, round 1. It took me about 2 full minutes to figure out he’s using the chains to smash the wood, which are beams holding up a building. I think? It’s a tad confusing and on top of that we’re expected to believe those chains wouldn’t tear his flesh? He’s not Superman you know. Unless of course…it’s a Freaky Friday switch! I do like how the white borders the cape though.

Brendan: Bats is doing his best Spawn impression, and I suppose it works. I do like how the cape creates the border of our image while allowing for that sweet, sweet negative space.
