WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Age of Ultron #10

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Joe Quesada

Dave: Ribbon twirling is the new thing.

And we’re twirling and we’re twirling!

Brendan: I mean, this isn’t the weirdest super power/weapon we’ve seen in the land of comics. Although, I don’t really even know where that ribbon is emanating from or how she is controlling it. When you add in the rock-midgets I can see how this cover would land in the WTF category.

A + X #8 (originally released May 22)

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Salvador Larroca

Brendan: There is a whole bunch of weirdness going on in this cover. Proportions seem be skewed in every possible way, whether you’re looking at Kitty’s triple-Ds or Spidey-lady’s gigantic head. Even once you force your way past the badonks and the jumblies you are met with some creepy “come hither” stares that are the epitome of unappealing.

Is Mrs. Spidey supposed to be smiling? She’s creeping me out.

Dave: Kind of an uninspiring cover aside from the dragon. I suspect we’re supposed to be interested by the smiles but they do seem a bit forced.

Morbius: The Living Vampire #6

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Patrick Zircher

Dave: So I guess one marketing ploy is to throw Wolverine on the cover of every single book now? What do these characters have to do with Morbius at all? Also, why is Domino awkwardly holding her gun like that?

Brendan: Hey, You guys! there’s a Wolverine movie coming out! Everyone look at Wolverine! He has a MOVIE coming out! It’s only a month away!

I must admit the complete lack of anything Morbius related on this cover is entirely disheartening. I understand the economic need to produce notoriety and push sales but I hate it when they don’t even try to mask their pimpings.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Age of Ultron #10

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Mark Brooks

Dave: I like the concept behind this. All of the alternate dimension versions of Sue and Logan are coming together into one. That detail alone gets me interested in this concluding issue. The vibrations are eye catching and I dig all the different haircuts of the Sues.

Brendan: Can someone tell me what comic I need to be reading to find the eye-patched, suave Wolverine? Because that is currently all I care about in life.

Batwoman #21

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

J.H. Williams, III

Dave: In all honesty Croc and Batwoman are meh in my mind, but I really love the bloody edged walls and silk screen backdrop.

Brendan: I, too, enjoy the bloody bolt of lighting that frames our fighters. I think more could have been done to integrate the characters within the concept, but overall I think it reads well.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Miniature Jesus #3

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Ted McKeever

Brendan: It would be WTF if it weren’t so well done. The detail in the creepy brain-animals alone is enough to sell me on this cover. When you look beyond the characters and realize that McKeever has created this using three colors and some quality stenciling you come to appreciate things that much more.

Dave: You could say this is a real…

( •_•)>⌐■-■

head trip.

House of Gold and Bones #3 (Variant)

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Steve Morris

Brendan: I think it’s the use of color that really sells me on this cover. I love seeing unique shades that cause what could have been a fairly standard scene to really grab your attention. The wavy drapery of the woman in black’s dress is also particularly catchy.

Dave: That is one trippy city. Note how the rooftops don’t actually point in the same direction. I also like how Morris made our female friend here a little too skinny. Helps make her that much more evil. The wench.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Life With Archie #30 Vvariant)

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Phil Jimenez

Brendan: Yeah, I picked an Archie comic for my cover of the week. What of it?

In honesty I chose this cover because it does an incredible job of informing a lot of us about the hidden truth. The Archie series must harbor an incredibly rich cast, history, and canon at this point in time. With over 70 years of Archie comics out in the world, this cover does a great job at detailing a glimpse of all of those key players who’ve been created to further Archie’s adventures. On top of that, the realistic renditions are remarkably distinctive and well produced.

Dave: This is like that Simpsons in the real world thing they did, only way less creepy. What makes this cover so good isn’t necessarily the realistic renditions but how it’s not just a sea of faces (something we’ve seen before). The school as a backdrop and pushing a few of the characters out in head to toe fashion helps keep things fresh.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Thunderbolts #11

Comic Book Preview: 6/19/13 - Archie, Jesus and Angela say Hi

Julian Totino Tedesco

Dave: Elektra meets Carrie, only this is probably a face she puts out five days a week. Love how Tedesco got those streaks to look so realistic and her eyes say it all: “don’t f--k with me.”

Brendan: Those eyes say it all, man. The intensity forged within those eyes is enough for any person to take that bitty seriously. I love the realistic look of the blood and the hair. The messiness of it all is truly grabbing.
