Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Gosh, what am I going to buy at the comic shop on Wednesday, June 26th? I wish there was some way to check out the cover art of the best books and then soothe myself with a full release list. Harumph…everyone picks the best covers after the comics come out! Whatever will I do?

Just scroll down gentle ones. Scroll down…

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Grimm Fairy Tales #86

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Mike Krome

Dave: This week on Nip/Tuck: a woman’s breast explodes. Helium never belongs in a breast. Cryin’ shame, as I always loved balloons.

Brendan: I would like to thank Dave for taking care of all the one-liners for this cover. Outside of those redonkulous melons, can we talk about the whole “sexy on a mound of skulls” thing again? Is this some sort of chauvinistic supplement to prop up a false sense of masculinity? Am I thinking about comic covers too much again?

Red Sonja #77

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Lucio Parrillo

Dave: Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? And by moon I mean Sonja’s ass. Why isn’t asslight a thing?

Brendan: Yeah… how is the light hitting that part of her rump? Don’t get me wrong, the majority of this cover is actually pretty spot-on quality. I suppose nitpicking the minor lighting gripe is a bit tasteless on our part but, hey, read the name of the website.

Crossed Badlands #31

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Miguel Ruiz

Brendan: Let’s talk concept for a second, kids. I enjoy the idea of a visible representation of time in the form of a photo booth strip. My only question: Why, in the middle of a worldwide pandemic would anyone, ANYONE, think it was a proper time to stop and have an enjoyable photo booth sesh? There is no logic here!

Dave: It was nice of the zombies to at least position his eye to see the photographs. Them’s some considering zoms.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Uncanny X-Men #7

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Frazer Irving

Dave: Check out the fluttering hair and the burning sword! Super cool stuff, and the mysty muggy nature of the surroundings capture the heat of Hell nicely.

Brendan: I do love the effect on the hair. The use of gritty overlays on the X, the sword and the stone gives this cover a nice, dark mood. I also love the black splotch of smoke rising behind our devil. It’s a super cool cover.

Wolverine & the X-Men #32

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Nick Bradshaw, Morry Hollowell

Dave: Bamf! Bamf times infinity! Love all the crazy Bamf’s and gotta love the body language Wolverine is displaying. It’s just screaming, “how yah like me now!”

Brendan: Everything about this cover works incredibly well. I do love Wolvie’s pose (along with his cocky smirk) and the unending army of Elfs is both awesome and overwhelming. You could spend a lot of time looking at all those ‘Crawler faces.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Young Avengers #6

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Jamie McKelvie

Brendan: This is a funny concept. In a world of uniformity and anonymity it doesn’t take much to stand out. On top of that, it reminds you that the superheroes of the world are just people too and at the end of the day, it’s a job to them.

Dave: Good point Brendan. Superheroes work too, only they get to fight aliens instead of data entry. Which brings up an interesting question: Why don’t superheroes get interns?

Larfleeze #1

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Tyler Kirkham

Brendan: I think we can all agree that the best thing to come out of Geoff John’s Green Lantern run is the creation of Larfleeze. I think this cover perfectly conveys the very concept. Lar’s greed is so consuming that he doesn’t even care what the items are, as long as they are his. The absolute joy on his face is perfectly Grinch-like and the detailed clutter is fantastic to visually sift through.

Dave: Even though we featured a similar cover here on the Preview about a year ago, I say keep them coming DC. It’s fun to see the character revel in his hoarder glee.

Age of Ultron #10 AI

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Paolo Rivera

Brendan: Here is another great cover concept. I think its perfect the way Rivera not only shows the transition of Pym through his outfits, but it also relays how a man from such small beginnings (PUN) can go on to create one of the most impressively evil machines ever known.

Dave: I like the concept of Ultron being the next evolution of Pym. It shows how maybe Ultron’s evil nature wasn’t an accident, but an evolution of Pym.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Witchblade: Rebirth, Vol. 3

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

John Tyler Christopher

Dave: Man, I’m getting lost in this cover and I’m not just talking the awesome use of red. The tats are particularly realistic and cool looking and the way the hair goes in and out with her arms is super mystical magic looking.

Brendan: I love the negative space in lieu of clothing. It makes everything so much more scandalous! The tattoos are pretty spectacular as well. On top of all that, there is something about those eyes that can only be described as piercing.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Akaneiro #2

Comic Book Preview: 6/26/13

Shu Yan

Brendan: I don’t know where to start. The colors are so catching. Her cloak grabs you and forces your perspective down her leg towards the ground. Only then do you notice the faded monsters that loom in the background and, as you go higher, you find more and more waiting. There is so much to love on this cover, from the style to the colors to the composition. It’s just incredibly well done.

Dave: Why is this cover giving me a Zelda vibe? The pose of our protaganist is quite good as there’s a ton of kinetic energy to begging to be let loose very shortly. I also dig the red crystals that are jumping up. They give the cover a bit of magic not otherwise there.
