Is It Good? The Powerpuff Girls #1 Review

My god the nostalgia! It’s all coming back to me now. I used to watch this show all the time when I was younger and it was a blast. So when I heard there was going to be a comic book series (or mini-series, I’m not one hundred percent clear on that), I had to check this out. Now that we can all read it, is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

In the city of Townsville, the Powerpuff Girls have once again wiped the floors with their old arch nemesis, Mojo Jojo. The super intelligent ape is at a loss from this, realizing every single thing he has done to try to take over the city has completely and utterly fallen flat on its face every time he goes up against the girls. Meanwhile, the girls get a special reward from the Mayor for all of their hard work at helping the city.

Look Mojo, what the girls are really saying is that you just have run out of ideas. Seriously? Stealing from Aliens now?

I’ll admit it has been awhile since I’ve watch the show, outside of watching an episode to refresh myself on the voices and characterization, but honestly, this still feels a lot like the show. Good sense of humor, the narrator talking, the characters and their personalities, the art style, and the way people behave in the show… this feels pretty dang close to what we know and love. In that sense, this is a great adaption and a true treat for the fans who’ve been waiting to return to this world.

But what about the nonfans? How will they react? Honestly, I don’t see how this will appeal to people who aren’t already fans and maybe younger kids. It relies on you already knowing everyone, their backstories (like Mojo Jojo’s for instance; the way he acts and his ultimate decision in the end makes a lot of sense for a person familiar with the show more than someone else), the style of the show, and how the story goes. What I’m saying is, this isn’t for you — guy who haven’t been a fan of this show.

What? You’re saying I’m an idiot or something?

The art itself? Pretty damn good recreation of the show with the character decisions, the coloring, and emotional expressions they have. Hell, I was looking at this comic and I kept hearing the sound effects from the show with how close and accurate it was. Definitely looks good for sure.

  • This is a pretty close and accurate adaption of the show.
  • Definitely a must read for the fans.
  • Not very reader friendly to new fans.

Is It Good?

Fans of the show, rejoice! This comic is just for you, capturing the spirit, style, and humor of the show all in this single issue. If the rest of run is just as good as this issue was, then we are looking at one fun and enjoyable ride.
