I’m not gonna lie, I was very disappointed with the last two arcs of Savage Wolverine. Just because Logan is in the Savage Land doesn’t make him savage. I want gore goddamit! And the arc with Elektra just wasn’t special in any way. I actually really enjoyed last month’s issue, it let the art tell more of the story, which proved to be a nice change. Does Jock keep up the good work? Is it good?
I’m not 100% clear on what’s actually happening (I don’t really understand the story) but that’s OK. This book is more about the emotions it evokes and the underlying themes than an actual storyline. I know I’m not alone, but I love it when Logan plays a father figure. He and this kid that he just met spend a good chunk of Savage Wolverine #10 bonding which gives us a little more sympathy for the duo and keeps us rooting for them.
After they wake up from a nice, deep slumber some sort of helicarrier swoops in and attempts to pick up both of them. For the first time since the start of this issue we really see the savage side of Wolverine. He is a killing machine as he hacks and slashes his way through the ship. This is beautifully drawn and inked and is a really exciting sequence.
The writing is adequate, not terrific. I think that Jock does a good job with the little boy’s lines and makes him sound realistic and a little obnoxious. I also think he did a pretty good job writing Logan’s speech which seemed to fit the character pretty well. The only reason I didn’t love the writing was a portion at the beginning was a touch cheesy and some of Wolverine’s lines came off a smidgen awkward.
Another theme that really shined through in this issue was desolation. Logan is so hopeless and out of control and that works to the story’s benefit in setting a defined tone to the book. The ending also seemed in keeping with that theme but also added a touch of mystery. Good stuff.
I don’t even need to say it, the art was spectacular. Every single page of this book was created with brilliant colors and inks and meticulous details on the pencils. This is some kick ass art.
