The armor hunters are here to kill whoever gets in their way of the X-O Manowar and just blew up Mexico City to show how serious they are. I think doing what they say sounds about right, but not when you got super powered heroes to tell them what’s up! Is it good?
Unity #8 (Valiant Entertainment)
This issue continues the major event that started in Armor Hunters #1 with the first page dropping us into the rubble of Mexico City. Over these shots and interviews with common folk is narration from Livewire as she attempts to find the recently MIA Bloodshot. This opens the book, but from here on out it focuses on Ninjak and Gilad encountering the big baddies who opened Armor Hunters, in Russia, destroying armors. The issue focuses on this sequence of events and ties nicely into the main event book.
When it comes down to a tie-in there two important factors at play. The first is, does it deserve to even exist and the second, does it tie-in well with the main event? As far as the latter is concerned it ties in perfectly, subbing in as a brief Rashomon style angling of seeing the story from another perspective. Unfortunately though it doesn’t get a lot done beyond progressing two very simplistic plot points. Writer Matt Kindt does well enough with the pacing though and nothing is boring here. The dialogue gets a bit wordy, but for the most part it’s a good action sequence even if there isn’t much progressing.
Yeah, because that’s being super hidden with your heads taking up all the space of that hole!
Another slight issue I had was how useless Gilad is in the story. He gets a moment to reflect on all the wars he’s experienced through history, which is going to solidify his argument that we shouldn’t repeat history, but it doesn’t pay off. He’s basically a brute force hero, so I can see how he would be hard to make interesting in an issue that’s straight up action, but it’s glaringly obvious he’s kind of pointless beyond being a heavy.
The art by Stephen Segovia is rather dark and moody, which works for the most part. It’s basically one long action sequence here, from the heroes skydiving down to their target, snooping around and then taking them on, so in a sense there isn’t much need for moody dark shadows, but it works well enough. The layouts and pacing never get stifled though, even when Kindt decides to stuff a page with a ton of dialogue.
Is It Good?
This is a good tie-in due to it fitting in very nicely with an excellently paced action sequence, but it only progresses the plot minimally. That means it’s skippable if you’re okay with skipping a few tie-ins.
