Is It Good? Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland #2 Review

Last month, some bizarre evidence and a giant eel attack turned Edward Grey’s investigative focus to 11. Now he’s searching for a supernatural explanation for the evil that hides in Hallam. Is it good?

Is It Good? Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland #2 Review

After giving the local law enforcement a VERY general description of his attackers, Grey goes on a tour of the Poole Elixir factory. It doesn’t take him long to realize that something foul lurks beneath Hallam’s industrial foundation.

Meanwhile, the reader is afforded much more information than the detective. Aside from the glimpses we get of clearly inhuman factory workers, a shadowy force is shown punishing the eels for trying to attack Grey…which in turn caused him to take a greater interest in the seemingly ‘mundane’ homicide case.

For the sin of creating a plot hook, YOU SHALL BE BURNED!

Grey’s investigation eventually puts him in contact with a factory worker who is ready to talk. But just as he’s giving the detective a big chunk of info, the man’s story is interrupted in the most Lovecraftian way imaginable.

Is It Good?

This issue follows the same ‘Slow burn…slow burn…HOLY CRAP!’ pattern of the last one. This time, however, a little more information and lot more gore is doled out. Thankfully, the fantastic artwork and enjoyable dialogue don’t ever make it feel like we’re just slogging towards the final pages.

My only quibble is that it sometimes feels as though the reader is too far ahead of Grey. Half the fun of this has been watching the detective process, which gets spoiled a bit when we already know what he’s trying to deduce.

Other than that, this is another strong chapter in a highly enjoyable miniseries.
