The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ blast through the past ends this month with a terrifying trip to the future. Is it good?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time #4 (IDW Publishing)

After arriving in the future, the Turtles happen to find a sweet pizza joint for a well-deserved meal. They also notice that the world around them is populated with other mutants. All in all, things seem pretty good… until they realize that New York is now under the rule of Shredder.
Just when things are starting to get interesting, however, Renet shows up to crap all over the story… although this time, she at least sticks around to help out a bit.

Ugh.
The Turtles and Renet escape to their former lair, where they are presented with a horrifying view of what the future holds for the world in general… and themselves.
Is it Good?
Wow.
While the odd numbered issues of this series stayed on the light side of things, issues 2 and 4 went very dark. This wasn’t just an “Oh noes the bad guys win in the end” deal, either. The Turtles also come face to face with the possibility that they will fail on a much deeper level, splintering apart in the face of adversity instead of standing together until the end.

“So Putin’s still around?”
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. The Turtles from the past help lead the last remaining version of their future selves in a rebellion that also serves as a chance for redemption… and to prove that the future is not set.
Paul Allor’s excellent script is well complimented by Dan Duncan’s flexible pencils, shifting seamlessly between the issue’s few (but greatly needed) light moments and the overall somber mood. Add in another big reveal about a future character along with a haunting ending, and you have an excellent conclusion to a fine miniseries.
