Is It Good? God Hates Astronauts #2 Review

After the first issue, which detailed an epic battle between celestial agriculturalists and a ragtag, paranormal team of space officials, issue two pursues a variety of eccentric characters and their stories. Is it good?

God Hates Astronauts is by far one of the most creative and bizarre comics I’ve ever read — unfortunately this issue got a little too strange. The first issue was able to construct an easy to follow storyline out of a ridiculous series of events. We got a glimpse at Dr. Professor’s past and current life problems, his roommates Dave with a large third arm (literally, not a euphemism) and his mutant pet Craymok, parenting struggles between Starrior and Star Grass, and the haunting of Gnarled Winslow.

While this issue certainly presents more laugh-out-loud moments, the plot seems much more arbitrary (Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a comic of this nature, but it’s always nice to see a little plot development). My only qualm is that the comedy felt a little forced at times, but I still laughed regardless.

GHA

We’re introduced to more brilliantly creative anthropomorphic characters which greatly outnumber the amount of humans featured. Another really enjoyable quality is the fact that the comic includes their own comedic advertisements as well as a short follow-up story for The Impossible who was last seen reeling through the atmosphere. These inclusions are short and sweet and are equally as funny as the actual storyline.

Is It Good?

This is yet another hilarious issue, but it’s a lot of what we saw in the first issue — just a bit more odd. We get to see more of Browne’s abstract universe, but the material isn’t as entertaining as issue one’s battle. Maybe next week we’ll get to see more Star Grass in action.
