Is It Good? Ms. Marvel #9 Review

Although a bit confusing, the last issue of Ms. Marvel ended off on a rather interesting and surprising note.

I’m more than curious to see what comes next. Is it good?

Ms. Marvel #9 (Marvel Comics)

After an intense fight and a sudden loss of her powers, Kamala Khan finds herself beaten and badly hurt. She managed to win, but barely. However, she gets help from a source she wasn’t expecting at all: Queen Medusa of the Inhumans.

Oh my gawd! This totes cute dog makes me so forget about that giant robot causing a mess 10 feet away.

The story in Ms. Marvel #9 didn’t advance the Inventor storyline until the very end (which pulled out a rather surprising ending), instead focusing more on some action scenes, Ms. Marvel’s meeting with Medusa and Kamala finally learning about who she actually is; that’s fine though, as the narrative was very enjoyable and engaging from beginning to end. There’s really no dull or slow moment to this issue.

G. Willow Wilson’s writing continues to shine. Kamala is still a charming, likeable, and rather relatable character through and through; the supporting cast is enjoyable to read (though I’m a bit disappointed by the fact that Medusa didn’t have a bigger role in the issue like I thought she would), and the dialogue and narration are full of personality. Speaking of which, the humor for the issue is pretty solid overall with plenty of moments to make you smile and laugh. The pacing is good, the story flows well from scene to scene, and the storytelling is good overall.

The artwork by Adrian Alphona looked great as usual, with some minor hiccups here and there for me. Most of the characters look fine overall, but some of the background characters or some of the police officers looked far more cartoonish than they should and some facial expressions left a lot to be desired. The layouts are easy to read and follow throughout the book, along with the decent looking action here and there. There are some occasional background gags that are quite amusing that occasionally pop up and are worth a chuckle. The coloring is fine as well, though not very noteworthy outside of Medusa’s hair (which is the most vibrant thing in the entire book).

Is It Good?

Ms. Marvel #9 is another solid entry to series from beginning to end. While the story didn’t progress as much as I expected the writing, character work, and the artwork still shined through. With that cliffhanger ending, it definitely has me interested in what’ll be coming next for our hero.
