Time to check out the last of this week’s weeklies with Earth 2: World’s End. Things just keep getting worse and worse for our heroes to the point where you are even starting to doubt whether they’ll succeed. Will they make it through this time? Let’s find out.
Earth 2: World’s End #4 (DC Comics)
Writers: Daniel H. Wilson, Marguerite Bennett, & Mike Johnson
Artists: Eddy Barrows, Jan Duursema, Tyler Kirkham, Robson Rocha, and Jorge Jimenez
The World Army approaches Mister Miracle, Big Barda, and Fury with an offer: they’ll give them back their Mother Box if they provide them with the intelligence on how to invade Apokolips. They say it’s pretty much pointless since the planet cannot be stopped… though Big Barda has an idea involving opening the Mobius Chamber; an idea that’ll be very costly.
In Geneva, the heroes are trying to recover and come up with a plan to infiltrate the fire pits across the world, though they’ll need some very fire resistant material in order to do so.
Jimmy Olsen returns the Mother Box directly to Mister Miracle, who is surprised that it didn’t destroy him. M.M. states that Olsen must have been chosen by the box for some unknown reason. M.M. then uses the box to purify the rest of the group from Beldam’s influence, except for Fury (it probably be difficult due to a lifetime of influence). However, she demands it be used on her and the results don’t seem pleasant.
In the Court of Apokolips, we just see the members argue a bit about whether they should stick around for their planet colliding with Earth.
Aquawoman contacts the World Army from Atlantis and informs them her kingdom has fallen due to the Fury that came through. In order to destroy it (which may cost the Earth greatly), Aquawoman is bringing out her own super weapon (the Trench looking creatures) to officially destroy the Fury.
The World Army contacts Green Lantern in Brazil to ask him to go and reason with Aquawoman before it’s too late. But before he can fly away, Grundy appears and starts attacking him.
Things only continue to get worse in the Soldier Field Stronghold in Chicago, with the Grayson Family continuing to try to survive in the hostile situation.
After getting suited up, the heroes head below into the fire pit where War went into. After they explore the pit (taking note these fire pits might be factories in disguise due to all of the molten metal), they are attacked by Desaad, the master of the Furies.
If there is one thing that I have to applaud this series for, it’s that it doesn’t waste a single panel or page. This book is always on the move and always has some form of plot progression happening with just about every storyline. I could never accuse this comic of being slow in the slightest bit. However, like in previous issues, the downside is that the book is so dense to the point that there is no moment of character development or slow moment to let the audience take everything in.
The writing still remains fairly decent. The dialogue is fine, the characters and characterization are decent, and the plotting is fine to a certain point. Last issue, it ended with Aquawoman about to face down a Fury and her army of undead Atlantians. The cover even teases a fight between them. This issue, however, completely skips over that and goes straight to aftermath of it. That’s rather cheap in my mind. The artwork did fare better this time though, since all of the artists’ styles did manage to flow better from page to page and felt consistent in tone (to the point where I couldn’t tell when they switched artists). I wasn’t fond of the fact that the artwork didn’t having inking in areas, but that’s neither here nor there.
Most Memorable Moment
Calling it now. This will be a deus ex machina down the line.
