The first issue of this new volume of Powers was pretty good. Maybe not the best entry point for new readers like it claimed it would be, but still a good opening issue.
With the second issue out now, let’s take a look at it and see if the comic is still going strong. Is it good?
Powers #2 (Icon)
Detectives Deena Pilgrim and Enki Sunrise continue their search for answers on who killed Roland Gabriel, America’s most beloved rich guy, and the death of tons of people aboard his private yacht. There are a few leads, since the victim didn’t really have much in the way of enemies, and what killed everyone may be related to a Power. It’s shaping up to be a tricky case for the two, especially with Pilgrim seemingly becoming more edgy as of lately.
Powers #2 is a good follow up the first issue, keeping the momentum and story going. While there are certainly sections where the comic feels decompressed and slow, it’s surprising and also rather refreshing that there was actually story progression going on. There is progress made on the mystery, build up for the characters and glimpses into what their lives are like now, and even the development of new and old subplots alike (Deena’s paranoia and Walker’s one-night stand incident) that keep one invested and curious about the story’s future. It’s really coming together nicely and I hope Powers can keep it going.
The writing on the book is good overall. The pacing is slow, but fine for the most part and keeps you engaged. The dialogue isn’t bad at all and it has its share of good lines, though it can be a bit dialogue heavy in areas. The characterization is still handled well, though we really don’t get to see too much of how Walker’s been doing in his current life like you would hope. The ending is pretty surprising and abrupt, but still good and only adds to the growing mysteries.

The artwork by Michael Avon Oeming is good, but it feels slightly off one area: the charater’s faces. On occasion, they look a bit too cartoonish or odd, like something is wrong with their eyes. Otherwise, there’s no real problem. The layouts are solid, the characters look good regardless and show a nice range of emotions, the coloring is nice, and there are some dynamic looking images. It’s good work overall outside of that one little nitpick and I don’t see anyone having any real problems here.
Is It Good?
Powers #2 is a good issue overall, continuing the story and momentum nicely. The writing and characters are still very good overall, while the artwork is nice and appealing. The only problems to really be had with this issue are nitpicks and that’s just fine. It’s another good outing for this new volume and I hope it can keep it up.
