Is It Good? Divinity #4 Review

Valiant’s brilliant sci-fi miniseries reaches its final issue. Is it good?

Divinity #4 (Valiant Entertainment)

Divinity finally reunites with the wife and unborn daughter he left behind. Unfortunately for him, they are just a construct created by UNITY to distract him (maybe). But Divinity isn’t just an all-powerful being unto himself; he also has an extremely loyal band of followers (i.e. a cult) who seem very pissed off about superhero team attacking the object of their worship.

While the battle rages outside the construct, Divinity deals with the grief and despair of discovering that both his wife and daughter have already passed away. They age before his very eyes while explaining that despite not having him around, they still lived very full lives (Damn, that’s one hell of an intricate construct).

It all leads up to an explosive ending that’s as heartbreaking as it is ambiguous.

Is It Good?

As usual, Hairsine’s art looks gorgeous. Ryan Winn (inks) and David Baron (colors) also deserve a lot of credit for how beautiful this book is.

And while I still hold to the belief that this series suffered by the addition of the UNITY team, I did feel they were much better utilized here. As someone new to the Valiant universe, I actually got to know the individual members and became interested in reading more about them…so well done, marketing department!

Okay, that might be a little too cynical. Matt Kindt does a great job using these characters to explore how different types of people (and their respective cultures/governments) would respond to a being of such immense power.

As far as Divinity himself, this issue made him seem by far the most human, even compared to how he was before leaving for outer space. The existential crisis he has through the story initially felt very by the ‘sci-fi emotion scene by-the-numbers’, but Kindt backs it all up with a powerful, soul crushing coda. It was more than enough to ensure that I will definitely be back for Divinity’s next appearance.
