Is It Good? Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #24 Review

This month brings us the penultimate issue to Godzilla: Rulers of Earth before the grand finale. Is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Woods is helping amass a force to combat the Trilopod threat. Just when he’s at his alpha dog best, someone lets slip that Lucy is probably in harm’s way. This causes him to completely lose focus, then get angry.

…once the tears stopped, of course.

Meanwhile, Emperor Karkaro continues being a complete dick to Rhizon. Rhizon finally decides he’s had enough and reminds Karkaro (though a beautifully drawn history lesson) that Karkaro fled like a total pansy when the cryog planet was destroyed by a monster…which seems like the type of thing he should have mentioned before.

In response to this slight, Karkaro blows up Rhizon’s ship and his crew. This triggers a genius failsafe Rhizon had in place which releases Gigan…which again seems like the type of thing that should have been brought up before.

Back on earth, Godzilla is (understandably) getting his ass kicked when Jet Jaguar shows up to lend a hand. Unfortunately, the massive force they face might just be too much.

Is It Good?

While it was nice to see Rhizon grow a pair, his two major declarations/acts of defiance seem like the type of thing he both should have and would have said before now. Add in Wood’s almost complete meltdown in the face of battle (something a person with his experience really shouldn’t have), and the two major character moments in this issue are more than a little perplexing.

Unfortunately, the fight scenes—normally a constant source of awesome in this book—aren’t really all that great.

Note: The amazing scene pictured above is an average fight scene for this series.

They’re not bad, though. In fact, there’s one panel of Godzilla roaring at the reader that is one of my favorite in the series so far. But other than the incredible last page and a neat Jet Jaguar appearance, it felt pretty run of the mill; for this title, at least. Hopefully the creative team is saving the best fireworks for next month’s curtain call.
