Is It Good? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #47 Review

Last issue, Casey was about to face the worst family reunion ever. This issue, it’s time to throw down. Is it good?

Is It Good? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #47 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

As you long time readers already know, Hun is kind of a dick. On the other side of the coin, his son Casey is a pretty swell guy. Both of them are pretty good at kicking ass, but it’s the type of people they surround themselves with that ends up being the key factor in their showdown.

Meanwhile, Donnie is still having some issues adjusting to his new robotic body (understandable), April gets a good excuse to go over to her own mini-series, and two major villains do something they do best…

Is It Good?

…which is keeping the status quo.

Okay, if you’ve read any of my reviews of this title (Hi Mom!), you know that I absolutely adore it. One of the reasons for my IDW TMNT love is that it loves to play jump rope with the how things are supposed to be. Of course we’re not going to have one of the main characters in a major franchise get killed, but Waltz still likes to play jump rope with their lives…and he’s awesome at it.

So I was more than a little disappointed to see that a major character who’d been effectively moved off the to side is already back to where he was. This would have been a really cool opportunity to see them out of their element. Instead, we’ve just sluggishly spun full circle.

Another thing that this comic normally does better than most is the cliffhangers. The last page of this one looked beautiful (as all of Manteus Santalouco’s artwork does), but I don’t think anyone reading it actually thinks the Turtles will have any problem with this particular threat, especially after what they faced just in the last arc.

And then there’s the big Casey vs. Hunn fight. I respect Waltz for resolving it in a unique way, but the ‘feel good’ aspect of that part of the story felt a little forced.

Hats off for the product placement, though.

All in all, this was by far one of the weaker issues of TMNT that I’ve read—which is still better than most stuff on the shelves, but not up to par with how great the book can be. Let’s hope this is just a small hiccup in the title’s otherwise stellar run.
