Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Vol. 3: Conversion Review

Some of the best bits of the Doctor Who television series are the overarcing storylines that encompass the whole season. When it comes to comics, reading a collection of multiple volumes might be the next best thing, especially ones starring the fan favorite eleventh doctor. With the release of The Eleventh Doctor Vol. 3: Conversion by Titan comics we get to do just that.

Is it good?

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Vol. 3 collects issues 11-15 of the series and concludes the story of an alien life form on the run simply known as the “Entity”. Although there is a one-off story in the first chapter, the rest of the volume has the Doctor and company fighting a seemingly omnipotent enemy known as the “Talent Scout”, who can bend reality and grant any wish. The Doctor is joined by 3 companions, one of who is the living brain of the “Entity”.

Like the best Doctor Who stories this volume finds a way to incorporate the larger story into smaller chunks in such a way as to seem unrelated at first. You’ll be reading about cybermen and Roman emperor Constantine battling only to have the realization it ties into the story of the “Entity”. Writers Al Ewing and Rob Williams seem to be on par with some of the best Stephen Moffat episodes of the show and the way they handle the character and pathos of the 11th Doctor make this a worthy addition to his legend. The story is crafty and never boring; a great example of how to transfer a world and character from one medium to another and remain faithful.

The one complaint may be that before the eleventh chapter there is a one-off story unrelated to the rest of the book and though it’s cute and nicely self contained, it slows down getting to the meat of the real story.

Is It Good?

If you’re a Doctor Who fan, especially if you like the 11th Doctor, it’s a no-brainer. For everyone else, there may be a longer adjustment period and some shorthand you don’t get right away, but the story really stands on it’s own.
