A new TV show, a new direction in the DC universe and now a new series to call her own. So far we’ve liked the series, but how is issue #2? Is it good?
Supergirl #2 (DC Comics)
So what’s it about? The DC summary reads:
“REIGN OF THE CYBORG SUPERMEN” part two! Supergirl battles Cyborg Superman in the Fortress of Solitude—and there can be only one winner! But even a temporary victory can spell certain doom for Kara and her new home as her father’s plan at last comes to light! Meanwhile, the race for Cat Grant’s prized internship heats up, and Kara finds her human competition to be just as challenging!
Why does this book matter?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re aware of Steve Orlando’s magnum opus that is Night of the Monster Men, as well as his great run with Midnighter as the main character. Add Brian Ching’s expressive pencils and it’s lights out!
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Peer into my eyes.
Ching’s art is sharp and incredibly expressive in this issue, making even the dullest of scenes interesting. He can deftly handle the high school scenes along with Cyborg’s monstrous visage too. The opening scenes showcase Cyborg Superman’s ability to open up in a jagged, disassembled way that’s very techno cool and Cat Grant is strong and clever.
This issue bookends well with Supergirl being told somethingthing, then getting confirmation of it. The confirmation comes with additional info that ties into Supergirl’s parentage that should pique interests next issue. In between, we get the setup of Cat Grant and a potential love interest for Supergirl.
It can’t be perfect can it?
This is a table setting issue for sure, which goes to some length to make you believe Cyborg Superman has a relationship with Supergirl, but not in a way that’s believable. It’s hard to take it seriously since the argument isn’t made strong enough and who knows if Orlando will pull the rug out from underneath us. It doesn’t help that the characters fight early on in the issue either.
I think he has an itch. Can you get it?
Is It Good?
This issue reveals a glint of detail with some flashbacks that may or may not be true. It sets up a character that could be a love interest too, but overall it’s an underwhelming table setting issue for sure.
