The Flash #9 Review

Now that Godspeed is locked up in Iron Heights, Central City is starting to feel like its old self again. Barry is beginning to help Wally understand his powers but an unexpected friend will bring along some experience that will be even more beneficial to the future of Kid Flash. Issue #9 of The Flash: Rebirth is bringing the past back to the present to help save the future.

“Kid Flash of Two Worlds” looks to open eyes to a new universe for Flash fans. Is it good?

The cover art sets a great introduction for this new chapter. Di Giandomenico devises such a striking image: two Wallys rush to Flash’s aid — and it’s a beautiful scene. The narration is from one Wally’s point of view and seems to be his take on Flash’s training and how being Kid Flash is starting to change his life. The first big action sequence is basically a training session; The Flash-Wally still doesn’t know who they’re dealing with is Barry and he speaks about him in an almost surreal way-idolizing his every more. Williamson has written this “new” Kid Flash as a very wide eyed and eager minded student. There are some great student/teacher moments between them.

But since we just lost another speedster in the last issue, let’s add another. Cue in Wally from another time — we’ll be calling him “The Flash” as well. I’m surprised by his arrival but there was some discussion about him in issue #1 so it was only a matter of time before he became part of the story again. There’s a point when Barry becomes kind of a jerk (he gets “speed force issues”) and “our” Wally needs some help understanding some new revelations. New Flash helps him out and starts to be another mentor figure. I’m curious to see how constant this new speedster will be since the universe he’s in doesn’t remember him.

I miss Barry. I know it sounds silly but the last few issues have focused more on Wally and his new persona (which is awesome) but I want to know what’s going on in Barry Allen’s world. I mean, he just put one of his best friends in Iron Heights, his girlfriend was killed, and he even had a speed force melt down but we haven’t really seen the effect on him. Hopefully we’ll get a good look soon. Always ready for the next chapter.
