Batman Beyond #6 Review

Terry’s life has changed quite a bit in the last 5 issues. So much so he’s probably gone through the biggest rebirth of all the DC Rebirth titles. As we approach the first issue of the newest story arc we answer the question: is it good?

So what’s it about? The official summary reads:

“RISE OF THE DEMON” part one! A new world power that no one anticipated or recognizes is reengineering large swaths of the planet in the aftermath of Brother Eye’s destruction. Batman is drawn into this tale of global conquest after a violent visit from his old foe, Curaré. His only chance of success hinges on an old friend joining him in the fight that looms ahead.

Why does this book matter?

Dan Jurgens has written a strong series so far and he’s reset the character in more ways than one in an effective way. That has made the character more attuned to the classic cartoon, but also more interesting due to the new dynamics of the characters at play. Add in Bernard Chang’s gorgeous art and you have a pretty cool series science fiction fans should love.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Batman Beyond #6 Review
Cool cityscape.

The title says it all as Curaré enters Batman’s life and with her comes the League of Assassins. It’s not the best timing (when is it ever?) because Terry is still trying to get his bearings as Batman and Bruce Wayne is recovering from a near death experience. This issue sets all that up while transitioning from what happened last issue and where we go from here; Jurgens does a good job establishing Bruce’s place in the story now that he’s back, but also how other elements come into play like Batman’s new costume.

A large portion of page time is focused on Terry coming clean with his ex-girlfriend. These scenes help set up the moral dilemma Terry is going through as he attempts to make his Batman life work around his love life. Given the cliffhanger I suspect that won’t last long!

Chang does a great job with this issue, particularly the cityscapes that populate the backgrounds. Curaré allows for much of the action, though the quieter moments with our Bat-heroes are quite nice due to the fantastic colors by Marcelo Maiolo. Seriously, the skin and faces look a little bit more real than you’d expect because of Chang and Maiolo’s combined work. There’s also a great use of blur to help convey the distances of spaces from the city to the Bat-cave.

You’re looking good for…what is it, 90?

It can’t be perfect can it?

The last nine or so pages intercut between Terry talking to his girl Dana and Curaré attempting to contact Batman. The concept works well and helps ramp up the need for Batman to be able to help others at a moment’s notice, but it runs on too long. The effect wears off and it starts to become obvious what Jurgens is doing. The action in this scene works well, but it wears out its welcome halfway through making you want something more or different sooner than later.

Is It Good?

Batman Beyond continues to change up character dynamics and play with the idea of a new direction for our heroes. This issue sets up a new threat and looks great doing it.

Batman Beyond #6
Is It Good?
A solid first issue in a new story arc that reminds us what is going on, some new wrinkles we weren't aware of, and an impending threat. It's too bad it drags on the last few pages though!
Art is top notch with good use of color to make faces look great
Good use of blur and fun action too
New threats are set up and Terry's life as a hero is put into question
The last 9 pages drag on a clever cutting between scenes that wears out its welcome

Great
