Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout #1 Review

It’s Guardians week and that means a movie and three, yes three Guardians of the Galaxy comics are hitting store shelves. Mission Breakout #1 is a done in one tale that ends up getting the team locked up, which certainly brings back some vibes from the first film!

Why does this book matter?

I couldn’t think of a better writer for this one-shot, as Christopher Hastings not only writes the funny Gwenpool, but he’s also headlining the I am Groot comic series!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Starting with the art, Tigh Walker does a bang up job drawing detailed art with solid layouts. The story never gets boring, confusing, or falls into the unfinished look trap. Groot is sporting his more recent dreadlock look and Rocket’s animated, stubby-legged personality shines through quite nicely. There are also a lot of aliens that pop up, which each look unique and monstrous. There’s a particular female alien with a connection to a monster that ends up being a standout near the end of the issue that looks so good I’d love to see this character again.

What a weird looking alien.

The story in the issue ain’t bad either. Opening with the characters imprisoned in some kind of traveling zoo run by the Collector, the team is in a situation that’s plausible given their track record. Hastings keeps the true purpose of their entrapment a secret with clues as to why scattered throughout so that when we do figure it all out it’s a fun and believable surprise. Rocket gets to show off his technical skills and each character has a moment to shine. The humor revolves around Drax and his bravado and lack of self-awareness, with one scene forcing a big belly laugh out of me. If you need a Guardians fix this will do it.

I wonder how you say it in that font?

It can’t be perfect can it?

For $4.99 Marvel might be asking a little too much of readers. It is a tad longer than your conventional $3.99 book, but it’s also a done in one adventure that retreads the familiar. Rocket uses his tech savviness to turn the tide, Groot and Drax use brute force, and the team once again gets themselves in a quirky situation. A perfectly good story, especially good if you need a Guardians fix, but a dollar more than it might be worth.

Is It Good?

If you are in need of a Guardians fix, look no further. This captures the fun foibles of the team very well and it’s even good for a laugh. The price is a tad steep, but who’s to argue with your needs!?

Is It Good?
A good done in one that'll give you your Guardians fix.
Art is sharp, and especially good at alien design
Rocket shines through and Drax will make you laugh out loud
The $4.99 price tag is asking a lot for this perfectly good, but not outstanding issue
