Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #22 Review

Though the Yellow Lanterns and Green Lanterns are teaming up, which is certainly different, the series as a whole has brought normalcy to the Corps for the first time in years. One might say Robert Venditti has written this series back from the dead, as for a while, the Corps was lost!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“FRACTURE” part one! A rash decision during a routine hunt for outlaw Sinestro Corps members leads to a confrontation that shakes the foundation of the fragile working relationship between the Green Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps. Can Hal Jordan pull the truth into the light and keep the peace?

Why does this book matter?

Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner, two of the greatest Green Lanterns, are in full force in this issue, so if you have dug Green Lantern in all its glory anytime in the last 30 years you’re in for some classic character action. This series has also been the blockbuster title since Rebirth, full of lots of action.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Some cool and big scope sci-fi stuff in here.

Venditti opens this issue with a bank heist. Well, not just any bank heist, but a heist of a bank planet! The poor souls on the planet call the only police force capable of handling an all out assault from a pirate group, which makes this one of the first issues to show off the Yellow and Green Lanterns working together on a usual beat. So far they’ve dealt with internal conflict and managed to pull everything together in the face of some unexpected threats. That means this is the first issue to show off the new combo space police force, and boy is it exciting.

If you dig big action you’re going to love this. Ethan Van Sciver brings the big splashy pages to life with great detail and tons of charm. Pirate Admiral Bolphunga is designed in a fun way, with some crazy ass teeth, and lots of bravado. He exudes confidence and is pretty scary, so that when the Lanterns show up in all their double page glory it’s just awesome. Hal of course comes in with the missile and plane constructs and overall it looks quite nice. Later, in a key moment for John Stewart, Sciver does a good job articulating his emotions–especially important since the Yellow/Green combo’s success rests on his shoulders.

There are some freaky looking Lanterns.

Venditti infuses the action with fun banter, like a Yellow Lantern trying out some smack talk and Guy laughing about it, which adds the human element to the characters. Outside of the big action, there’s a big question asked of a certain Yellow Lantern that could create some unrest down the road, and fans who have questioned Hal’s actions in killing Sinestro should definitely read the last page.

It can’t be perfect can it?

As is customary with Sciver drawing this series, the comic can read very quickly. He loves to drop full page and double page spreads, so if you’re a reader who doesn’t linger on a page you might find this is over quicker than other titles. It is only $2.99 though!

Is It Good?

This is the action series to read in comics. Not only does it have big and blockbuster style action, but the character drama is interesting, easy to navigate, and fun.
