Green Lanterns #28 Review

Two of the newest Green Lanterns are stuck on Earth billions of years into the past. NBD, right?

Sam Humphries is writing an epic Green Lantern story that ties into the very origin of the heroes. Given Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are still rather new to being Lanterns it’s rather genius to have them interacting with the origin of it all. With time travel on the table, will they be directly involved in what we know now as the Green Lanterns?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“OUT OF TIME” part two! Simon and Jessica go from basic training on Mogo to training some of the first beings in the universe to wear green rings! Trapped in the past, the Green Lanterns of Earth must rally the first seven Lanterns to defeat a threat that could destroy the cosmos!

Why does this matter?

This series has been good for great character writing and on top of that it’s revealing new parts of the Green Lantern mythos fans of all kinds should keep an eye on. It has also managed to come out on a bi-weekly basis and stay high quality. When is Humphries getting to write an event already!?

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

I believe I can fly!

This issue opens with a reveal of another original Green Lantern and the day she was called into action. Humphries has this character tie into a familiar race, which adds to your interest of them. Their first getting the ring ties well into the main story, which has Jessica and Simon still stranded on Earth billions of years in the past and about to meet the first seven Green Lanterns. Humphries sets things up well so if you’re just joining the story you won’t be lost.

The coolest element of this issue is how Humphries shows the first Green Lanterns are not what you’d expect. Recently given the power of their rings, these characters aren’t heroes by any means and are just grasping how it works. Enter Jessica and Simon, who Humphries has shown grow over these 28 issues, but who also consistently mess up. They aren’t the best teachers in the world but this story suggests they’ll have to be. It’s a fun twist that will assuredly pay off with great storytelling beats later.

This issue also ups the ante as far as Volthoom and his impending threat. There are a lot of variables in play here and it’s fun to see how Jessica and Simon will make do.

The art by Eduardo Pansica is just great with a fantastic intro (complete with a sweet The Right Stuff reference) of a character getting the Green Lantern ring. Folks will have these seven Green Lanterns stick with them due to a great double page splash of each character who are all very different from each other. There are plenty of heroic poses too and Pansica is always good at capturing emotions whether you’re human or a hairy alien!

These two are always in over their head.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Customary to comics, this issue is heavy on the miscommunication fight sequence. It’s a trope that is somewhat ineffective since we all know how it will play out.

Is it good?

Another great chapter in a story arc that many will be talking about for years to come. Humphries is single handedly changing the Green Lantern mythos and it makes for exciting storytelling.

Is it good?
Another strong issue in a series that'll be a must read when collected.
Another good intro of an original Lantern
Jessica and Simon are in a real pickle and it's fun to see them once again out of their element
Art is exceptional at capturing facial expressions and the different types of characters
The trope of fighting each other rather than talking does deflate the conflict
8.5
Great
