One of my favorite comics of 2017 comes to a close this week in its sixth issue, depicting sex, drug use, and lots of violence. It’s a comic that spans different realms, utilizes incredible technology, and kicks all kinds of ass.
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
MINI-SERIES FINALE The stunning conclusion to the epic MAGIC SOCKS saga! Daphne returns to Earth to hopefully save Gwen and Rita’s butts. Will the Grrl Scouts finally resolve their differences in time to take out Josie and her murderous cult of teenage fans? This ish is stuffed to the gills with an action-packed story, bonus art, soundtrack, and sketchbook. Plus, a variant cover by artistic sensation ERIC CANETE!
Why does this matter?
When you pick up a comic and think, “Please let them make another series after this” you know the comic is doing a good job. Jim Mahfood and Justin Stewart have been creating poetry with this series. Poetry that’s dirty, visually striking, and a lot of fun.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Love the fun little arrows.
The owner of the magic socks was figured out last issue and now it’s time to kick ass. Particularly the villain’s, who has taken the world by storm with her tasteless music and her ability to kill anybody with her magic cell phone. Daphne is back from heaven (or is it hell?) to help out her compatriots who lost last issue but still have plenty of fight in them. This issue is all about the violence (save the drugs till the battling is over, people!) with striking visuals and colors throughout. There’s also some neat, otherworldly business thrown in too. By the end Mahfood has basically reset these characters and their relationships, which is all good in my book since most of this series has been about the destruction of the Grrl Scouts.
I paid close attention to backgrounds in this issue because the majority of them allow the art to pop off the page. Using Ben-Day dots, checkered gray, or even stark white backgrounds, Mahfood and Stewart allow the art to zing you right in the corneas. There’s a lot of cool layering throughout the issue on top of that, like impossibly bent skyscrapers in front of red blotches of crowds with the characters in front of that. It gives some panels a layered 3D look that’s trippy as hell. Speaking of panels, the conventional boxes are thrown out the window and that creates a neat graffiti effect throughout the work.
Can’t believe she fell for that.
It can’t be perfect can it?
This issue might have the least to chew on story or character wise. You can’t blame it really given its one extravaganza of violence after another, but it’s worth noting.
Is It Good?
Visually stunning and non-stop with the action, this is a thrilling end to a visually memorable series.
