Amid Kevin Spacey scandal, House of Cards’ final season is on hold “until further notice”

“This will give us time to review the current situation with our producing partners at MRC.”

The conclusion of Frank Underwood’s presidency will have to wait, if it ends up happening at all. Netflix announced via Twitter that in light of the sexual assault allegations against House of Cards star Kevin Spacey, production on the show’s final season has been suspended until further notice.

Hollywood scandals involving allegations of sexual assault are happening left and right, and Spacey is the latest to be caught in the crosshairs. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making a sexual advance toward him when he was just 14 years old.

Bizarrely, and wholly inappropriately, Spacey responded to these allegations by coming out as gay. He tweeted, "This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. … I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior."

It is an unfortunate choice of words that associates being gay with being a pedophile, an untrue conflation that the gay community has been fighting to distance themselves from for decades.

It’s a messy situation, and for now, Netflix and their House of Cards production team is taking a step back to make sense of it. More information on House of Cards‘ final season will be reported as it becomes available.
