Coyotes is a new series from Image that follows Analia, who we learn to be an orphan. She has a sword, a best friend and a hatred of coyotes. The coyotes are monsters who prey on women and young girls. Taken in by a woman only known as Dutchess, Analia is trained to be the coyote’s worst enemy in the City of Lost Girls.
The comic has a lovely juxtaposition of kids being kids and having fun alongside the violence and loneliness that comes with being a badass coyote hunter. Analia and her friend Eyepatch also try and live like the young people that they are and the dialogue they have between themselves in this book is on point — I can hear their voices when reading the book, which is never a bad thing, and I will happily read on to see what happens to these characters next. If you’re wondering what the bait is to hook you all I can say is the clue is in the title.
The first thing that stands out about Coyotes #1 is how great the art is. Caitlin Yarsky’s art is great and suits the story perfectly. The color palette and lettering should also get a pat on the back as it all comes together very well.
When I finally stopped looking and started reading it, though, one thing I noticed right away was the amount of swearing in this book is ridiculous.

The story is a little heavy handed if anything, and maybe a tad predictable. But the art can carry it, it flows well and has the energy I’d expect an Image #1 to have. With so many creator owned titles out there, it has a lot to contend with and I feel it holds its own pretty well. There are moments when the book genuinely sucks me in. The story jumps back and forth, showing you how Analia came to be the badass that she is and what is happening now, and let me tell you this, there’s a lot of dead people happening now!
Overall, Coyotes is off to a good start. The writing can feel a little forced, but the story has a great energy to it and the wonderful artwork more than its end of the bargain.
