Half Past Danger II: Dead To Reichs #3 Review

Tons of action makes this a highlight issue.

Dinosaurs vs. World War II heroes in Japan. Who ya got?

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The prize: priceless intel on the Nazi pathogen. With the help of Ishi’s sister Emiko and with Spot the Deinonychus in tow, the daring raid is afoot. But something none of them expected lies in wait within… something BIG.

Why does this matter?

Stephen Mooney has quite a story on his hands here — it’d make a wicked good movie. This time the characters are off in Japan to stop the manufacturing of dinosaurs (we presume) after stopping the Nazis from doing this once before. This issue is action packed and comes complete with ninjas!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Low blow man!

Nearly every inch of this issue is fight scenes and family drama as Ishi’s family really doesn’t like his American friends. The issue opens where we left off as Sergeant Flynn is going up against a velociraptor. This flows nicely into a semi-comedic sequence with Ishi’s parents who regretfully take these characters in. Understandable since they put their kid in harm’s way. The mission is laid out and the rest of the issue focuses on a bit of espionage and infiltration.

Mooney continues to draw these characters strikingly well with great attention to detail and well choreographed action. This opening scene, and then a longer attack on a research facility, amount to some of the best action you’ll see all year. We’re talking a double page spread of ninjas and Nazi mech stuff here. Noble gets to hulk out with his muscles and Moss does her Black Widow-like black leather ninja stuff too. There’s a lot of exciting action and everyone gets to play.

The in-between scenes help relay important info, like Moss’ lingering pregnancy and a key scene with an evil baddie turned away in a chair. There’s more to these villains and Mooney hints we’ll be getting that eventually.

Time to bro down.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Give us a face on these villains already! Three issues in and it’s still unclear what the bad guys are doing or who is leading the charge. This issue makes it clear that’s very much on purpose — Flynn even mentions how easy it was to infiltrate the research facility — but having no character tethered to the bad guys means there’s a lack of purpose to the bad guys as a whole. As Nazis it’s easy to hate them, but it does make them a bit hollow.

Is It Good?

The best action you’re going to get in comic books all week. Highly detailed ninjas, American hero, Nazi battling. Get some!
