The Doctor is in.
BBC America has just released the first official photo of Jodie Whittaker in costume as the 13th Doctor from the science-fiction television series Doctor Who.
The costume of the Doctor’s has always been seen as an iconic part of the character, fitting their personality. Whittaker’s costume is a colorful, unique outfit with suspenders, rolled up trousers, boots and a large open coat. Whittaker will be taking over the part of the Doctor from Peter Capaldi, who confirmed in January 2017 that the tenth series would be his last.
On the announcement of taking over the role as the Doctor, Whittaker had this to say: “It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not to be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. It feels incredible.”
Several of the former Doctor Who actors have reacted positively and vocalized their support. The Sixth Doctor who was portrayed by Colin Baker, tweeted a quote of his own character in his introductory stories The Caves of Androzani and The Twin Dilemma, “Change my dears and not a moment too soon–she IS the Doctor whether you like it or not!”
We’ll see Whittaker on screen in the iconic role this Christmas.
