In a new edition, this collection of issues ends the first volume of Runaways, and it does it with a bang.

Runaways flows so well, and even the standalone stories feel like part of the whole. The first issue in the collection features a play on Oliver Twist, with a kidnapped Molly being forced to break into banks to steal for an evil scientist. It’s Molly at her best, brave and feisty, and proving herself an excellent leader.

The rest of the collection is the entire storyline of Alex’s former gamer friends gathering to attempt to bring him back to life, but instead they pull his father into the future from 1985. Geoffrey Wilder is just as evil as a younger man, and he’s ready to finish what the Pride started before the Runaways took them down.

This storyline also has the gang all back together, with Karolina and her fiancé arriving back from their interrupted wedding in space to help fight Geoffrey and the misguided gamers. It’s a beautifully plotted story, letting you feel for both sides, seeing how the gamers are being manipulated into believing what they are doing is right. It’s also the storyline that packed the greatest emotional hit since the death of Alex, changing the book forever.

While this is not a trade to pick up without any previous experience with Runaways, especially in the final pages, it does showcase what makes Runaways such a fantastic book. And it’s a must-have to a full collection — especially at $14.99, you are getting a lot of story for your money.
