Gravediggers Union #2 Review

Things get a lot more complicated in this second chapter.

In a world where monsters are like a natural disaster, a band of defenders no less necessary than a weather channel. That might be oversimplifying it, especially with the godlike flashbacks in this interesting new Image Comics series, but it does raise an interesting question. If monsters were among us, attacking all the time, what would humanity do?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

Cole and the boys have to go ask the witch Morphea to help them find the mysterious cult behind the coming apocalypse. One problem: witches and gravediggers do NOT get along. And we’re introduced to Morgan: prophet of the apocalyptic Black Temple cult, and Cole’s estranged daughter!

Why does this matter?

The first issue knocked my socks off, especially with the scope the story had. Many millennia ago we were all just slaves to some kind of alien (no it’s not Scientology) and somehow that connects to the monster attacks of today. There’s a mystery wrapped up in an action packed premise and it’s a series that is incredibly fresh.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

What the…

This issue opens like the last issue with Wes Craig drawing and writing a flashback to a time when strange shit was going down on the planet Earth. It seems there’s a promise of more info amongst the new bits we learn this issue and that only enhances your interest. The rest of the issue carries forward Craig’s story about a man with an amulet and a desire to know what it can do. This involves meeting with a strange woman who can see the future who also has information on the protagonist’s daughter. Wait, what? Craig leads the reader along with new bits of information and as we take these things in, the dynamic of the situation changes nicely.

It took two issues, but it’s quite clear in what direction this story is going after this issue. That helps give the main narrative a sense of purpose. In a key scene, we learn some rich old men have been involved in some key details which gives the amulet a bit more meaning. It’s still very unclear what it all means, but a McGuffin has formed in the amulet that should bring the two plots together.

Toby Cypress continues to draw in a gritty way with washed out colors overlaying the images. This creates a trippy effect that increases the weirdness of a woman who can see the future or the tension in a room filled with Forbes 100 CEOs. The use of these overlays ramps up the meaning in a scene and helps set it apart from the rest.

She seems totally trippy.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Essentially this book is three scenes, one of which continues the flashback story, but the others don’t do quite enough to keep this book moving at a crackerjack pace. The meeting with the Oracle is interesting to a point, but overstays its welcome and probably could have been cut down a smidge. By the end of the issue, a new purpose is given to the series, but it could have used a bit more.

Is It Good?

I’m digging this new supernatural-meets-gods-meets-creation story as it’s highly unique. The pace might be a smidge slow, but you can’t deny this is great supernatural comics.

Is it good?
A strong second issue allows the comic to gain a direction and more purpose.
The flashbacks to the distant past continue to be awesome
The plot thickens quite a bit as a direction to the series formulates
Enjoy the trippy layering of color
The oracle character overstays her welcome
8.5
Great
