Movies to look forward to in January 2018

Here are some January releases that may be worth your time.

January and February are traditionally known as “dump months” in Hollywood. Coming out of the packed holiday season, movies released at the beginning of the year tend to have lower commercial and critical expectations, but that does not mean there is nothing worth seeing, however. Here are some January releases that may be worth your time.

January 5th

Molly’s Game (Nationwide) – Aaron Sorkin has an impressive resume having created The West Wing and adapted The Social Network for the big screen. Sorkin makes his directorial debut in this true story about Molly Bloom, a former competitive skier that hosts high-stakes poker games that attract celebrities, athletes, Wall Street and eventually, the FBI.

January 10th

The Room (Limited Release) – Tommy Wiseau’s cult classic has garnered more interest than ever due to The Disaster Artist. If you have the chance, watch this one. (Trailer includes bonus Tommy Wiseau underwear commercial!)

January 12th

The Post (Nationwide) – Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in a movie directed by Steven Spielberg? I guess Academy voters wanted to take it easy this year. The Post is the story of how the The Washington Post and New York Times clashed with the United State government over the Pentagon Papers.

The Polka King (Netflix) – Netflix original movies were a mixed bag in 2017 with Death Note, Gerald’s Game, and Bright all being met with varying degrees of success. The Polka King is yet another true story, this one starring Jack Black as Jan Lewan the man behind the “Polka Ponzi Scheme.”

Along with a number of movies based on true stories, there will be additions to long running franchises (Day of the Dead: Bloodline, Insidious: The Last Key, Maze Runner: The Death Cure), animated features (Arctic Justice Thunder Squad and Paddington 2), what looks to be a GTA V clone (Den of Thieves), and more. Let us know in the comments what movies you are looking forward to in January.
