Judging by the Cover – 1/17/18 new releases

Lisa and Eric select the best covers from this week’s new comic releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea of what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributors Lisa Allison and Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Lisa’s Picks:

Stained Trade Paperback
Cover Artist: Steve Morris

Judging by the Cover - 1/17/18 new releases

I was drawn to the patterning of this cover with its diagonal line design that carries circular shapes across the page. The sun is mimicked by the sunspots and then that same shape is carried downward to each corner of the cover with the young girl and bald man’s head. The story appears to be painted on the strong female character. A bleeding effect gives the impression that she is being consumed by these events. Or is it that she is pulling herself free and the pictures are washing away from her as she rises. Overall, a striking cover that leaves me wondering what story this character has to tell.

Doctor Strange #384
Cover Artist: Michael Del Mundo

Judging by the Cover - 1/17/18 new releasesHot pink is an excellent backdrop for this wicked Doctor Strange. Menacing white teeth and red eyes depict pure evil. The tendrils of smoke or perhaps it is magic begin with the sweep of his hair. Twisted filaments grow in size and complexity as they dissipate. Your eye is immediately drawn to the striking black “X” that is Dr. Strange’s power. Is he corrupted and what damage will he release on the world?

Malefic #5
Cover Artist: Dan Schaffer

Judging by the Cover - 1/17/18 new releasesNo need for tattoos when you can start cutting your favorite pastimes into your flesh. This woman is sexy without being half naked. And thank you for making her proportionate. This is a beautifully executed pin-up style cover with a harsh twist. Her dress is simple, yet sexy–as is her pose. The blood splatter adds a nice touch of depth where it overlaps her skirt folds. Here’s a psych ward pin-up that no one can ignore.

Eric’s Picks:

Nightwing #37
Art by Yasmine Putri

Judging by the Cover - 1/17/18 new releases

This cover has a really strong union between Nightwing’s past and his present, and the composition is just phenomenal. The way Batman and Robin’s capes form the “V” shape of the Nightwing emblem is inspired, and the blueprint view of Blüdhaven is gorgeous. Every little detail is placed perfectly to guide the viewer’s eye. Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give Yasmine Putri for this piece is that at one point I made it my cellphone wallpaper.

Nightwing #37
Art by Jorge Jimenez

Judging by the Cover - 1/17/18 new releases

Yes, I already picked Nightwing, and I’ll pick it again. This is another strong composition, and the colors are just beautiful. The hourglass flow of the bats and blue light down through the center to Dick is fantastic, as is the nod to Bruce and Damian. Great work from Jorge Jimenez, as always.

Aquaman #32
Art by Joshua Middleton

Judging by the Cover - 1/17/18 new releases

This Joshua Middleton cover is just gorgeous. The flow of Mera’s hair, and the way the red and gold pop against the green…’nuff said. Gorgeous!
