Dastardly and Muttley #6 Review

Dastardly and Muttley are the world’s last, best hope–will our band of heroes stop War Pig One and reverse the effects of Unstabilium on the world?

Dastardly and Muttley has been an interesting roller coaster ride. Did I mention that I don’t really like roller coasters? I jumped on board once I heard Garth Ennis would be writing the story, but I am sad to say that I haven’t enjoyed the story as much as I was hoping I would. The final issue is out today. How will Dastardly and Muttley #6 end? Will I be happy? Will I be sad, or will I just be happy that it is finally over with?

Dastardly and Muttley #6 Review

It’s the final issue, Dave! Things have to get good!

You would think that, wouldn’t you? I thought so too. I was hoping so. But, I don’t think this issue did any favors for the series. From cover to cover, Dastardly and Muttley #6 is one long drawn out climax. I thought it would be exciting. Dick, Mutt, Zee, and Uncle team up together for one final run to take down War Pig One from infecting humanity with its Unstabilium — the chemical that transforms humans into weird cartoon animals.

The four all pile into a single fighter jet. Zee is piloting the jet, Uncle is in the co-pilot chair, while Dastardly and Muttley are on the wings like a pair of desperados. The set up is impressive; the execution is a failure. War Pig One is in sight and a conversation breaks out between Dastardly and Muttley that disrupts the flow of the moment. Muttley questions their motive and thinks maybe they should back off. He is ready to come to terms that he can be a dog with his family for the rest of his life. He doesn’t want to attack War Pig One anymore. Dick thinks Mutt is insane and tells him they have to stop the drone. Basically, what it comes down to is their Unstabilium colliding with the Unstabilium in War Pig One will counteract and things will return to normal. But Mutt doesn’t believe two wrongs will make a right.

Anything redeeming of the book?

Mauricet’s art has been decent throughout the series and he doesn’t disappoint here. I like the looks of the characters and combined with John Kalisz’s colors, the book is visually appeasing. I just had a hard time with Garth Ennis’ story. He had a good idea, but I don’t know if he was right guy for this set of characters. I thought it would be fun to see him take on Hanna Barbera characters, but in the end, it just didn’t sit well with me. I still love you Garth!

Overall, the book and the series as a whole aren’t entirely terrible. There are some fun moments in Dastardly and Muttley #6, however, I was expecting a lot more to the end of the story. If you are a fan of these characters, then I say go ahead and check out this issue and the rest of the series. You just might find more joy with the story than I did.

Is it good?
The artwork overall is gorgeous. I like the looks of the characters and the colors
Some comedic moments. Interesting secondary characters that I would have liked to see more of
Climax scene is the 90% of the book. How come it didn't feel as exciting?
Love the characters. Love Garth Ennis. Don't think they mix well.
