The “Mutiny at Mon Cala” continues with part two this week and yes, it does involve Mon Calamari Ackbar. This issue involves a mission of high importance, Leia deliberating with leaders, and Luke drinking a whole lot of milk.

Why does this matter?
Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca are on a roll and have done a bang-up job tying the original cast of heroes into the realm of Jedha in the last story arc. Now they’re developing their relationship with Mon Cala and the lore of that planet.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Han can’t stop talking about the Kessel Run.
This issue moves a few key pieces around so as to prepare us for the great prison break alluded to last issue. That includes a major Red Squadron pilot who joins up with Han and Luke at the local bar. Kieron Gillen continues to show he’s great at natural dialogue, easing the reader in and making us believe Han and Luke really did hit up a bar (and Luke insisted on milk). As these characters commiserate over lost compatriots, Leia is doing some heavy lifting with Mon Mothma and Jan Dodonna (the old curmudgeon). Gillen does a good job making the politics of the Rebellion interesting while setting up the big mission.
The issue sets off on the first part of the mission which involves a breakout. Han gets to show off his brutish charm (and impatience) and Chewie’s choice for bounty hunter names is questioned. It’s a quick but efficient little mission.
That dude needs to chill out.
It can’t be perfect can it?
As a table setting issue, there’s a certain amount of thumb twiddling going on. Do we need to see Han and Luke hang out in a bar six pages when a comic is only 20 pages long? As a transitional chapter, it’s going to read much better in a collected format.
Larroca’s art ends up looking very flat in this issue, possibly because backgrounds end up being blank colors and nothing more. The bar, in particular, is rather boring and save for an occasionally detailed background it’s mostly flat. That makes much of the dialogue feel more like a play, especially since most of it takes place with little to no action at all.
Is It Good?
A slower issue to be sure that sets up more than delivers action or even great story beats. I’m on board for what’s to come, but this is more of a transition rather than a necessary chapter.
