Harry Potter and the Half-Assed Photoshop — someone needs to go back to wizarding school

You get an “F” in Transfiguration.

We live in an amazing time, when everyone has a high resolution camera in their pocket, ready and waiting to snap multiple photos within seconds of anything noteworthy we may happen to come across. Yet somehow, the hide-and-seek championship team of Bigfoot, Nessie and a fleet of space aliens remain elusive.

Making matters worse for those still holding out hope on the reality of these things is the ubiquity and increasing sophistication of photo and video manipulation techniques. It’s getting to the point that faked pictures are nearly indistinguishable from the real deal.

This is not one of those examples. This is a made-up monster the origin of which is so obvious, people caught it almost immediately. Sam Crehan on the official Facebook group of the MonsterTalk podcast, for example, recognized the pose of a 7-foot “monster dog” that has supposedly been causing panic in Argentina.

Published on a bonkers UFO YouTube channel and picked up by that bastion of journalist integrity, the UK’s Mirror, it’s actually a flipped image of concept art for Remus Lupin’s werewolf form in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Need a clearer visualization? Jeff Wagg of College of Curiosity popped the image right in there.
