The heist story on Mon Cala continues this week in the penultimate issue of the story arc with Luke, Leia, and Han all rushing to save the Calamarians and release them from the Empire’s rule. That could spell doom for our favorite Star Wars characters, but then again we know they’ll live through this so they can continue their adventures in Empire Strikes Back.

Why does this matter?
Holy crap guys, we get a new Star Wars movie this week! While this story isn’t about Han Solo singularly he’s still in it and it’s canon. C-3PO also continues one of his most hilarious turns in the franchise.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
They think they’re so special.
As mentioned above, C-3PO’s role as translator and overall worry wart continues in this issue and he gets the best lines. It’s fun to see how Gillen makes him actually enjoy the limelight which is surprising given he’s usually hiding or fleeing any action at all. As he continues to aid the shapeshifter, the other characters continue their mission to save the king that the Empire has imprisoned. As the cliffhanger of the last issue revealed though he’s incredibly sick and it’s impossible to break him out. That makes their portion of this story require guns and lots of running.
The Mon Calamari end up getting a moment to shine as Gillen reveals their spirit and fervor for justice is put on display. This is due to Leia, Luke, Han, and Chewie’s actions, which helps set up the cliffhanger and also give the main characters purpose in an indirect way. As Rebels, they must know they can’t make a people do whatever they want and it’s a logical progression of the story.
Larroca draws this issue and gets to show off his skills with ships like the Millennium Falcon and Star Destroyers. There’s plenty of technology to draw, which is his strength, and the occasional Han and Leia scene looks photorealistic.
Nice glow on the Stormtroopers.
It can’t be perfect can it?
There are a lot of goofy images of characters that don’t look right at all. Luke in particular looks nothing like Mark Hamill and Han has plenty of weird faces. It’s pretty much par for the course for the artist though so it’s nothing new.

The actions in this issue, and those that precede it, are a long way to get to a cliffhanger that probably didn’t need half the scenes that take place. C-3PO is funny in the opening scenes, but the humor goes way over the top later on. Then you have the escape of our heroes from the prison which is way too easy and makes all the effort to sneak in all the more ridiculous.
Is it good?
A decent issue that gets the job done, but it’s easy to skip as nothing really stands out or entertains quite like the great last issue.
