Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary Screening at The Greek Theatre

On Monday night, The Greek Theatre held a 25th anniversary screening of Jurassic Park hosted by Fandango. June 11, 1993 was the day the original film was released into theaters, so this screening was 25 years to the day of its release. It was such a fun experience to watch the film outdoors with a big crowd at The Greek under the night sky.

Upon entering the venue, there was a massive T-Rex in the middle of the entrance/concession area. There was a fun little red carpet for photo ops as well as a small Jurassic World-themed photo op. There was free popcorn and free waters for all which was a nice touch.

L to R: Ariana Richards, Frank Marshall, Nikki Novak

Once I finally entered the outdoor theatre itself, which is one of my favorite music venues in Los Angeles, I saw the large screen on stage and knew this was going to be a good time. Fandango host Nikki Novak introduced the film, playing a pre-recorded intro by Steven Spielberg and a trailer for Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom. Then she brought out the co-founder of Amblin Entertainment, Frank Marshall, who has produced all three Jurassic Park films and all three Jurassic World films.

Nikki held a Q&A with Frank that was really interesting and fun. He told stories of how him, his wife Kathleen Kennedy, and Steven Spielberg (the three co-founders of Amblin Entertainment) would actually sneak in the back of movie theaters back in the day to see audience reactions to films. He said they knew early on that Jurassic Park was going to be a success of some sort given how positive the early test reactions were, but they didn’t realize just how big of a monster they had on their hands. His favorite scene in the film is the kitchen scene. He also discussed how back then, films were in the theater for an incredibly long time. He says he’ll never forget that for Raiders of the Lost Ark, he actually went to two different theaters to see it on the one year anniversary of the day it was released. Films played in the theater for over a year sometimes back then! I found that incredible.

He also shed some light on the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and explained how this one will take place mostly off the island of Isla Nubar. It will set up the third and final film in this Jurassic World trilogy.

After the Q&A, Fandango brought out one more special guest: Jurassic Park star Ariana Richards, who played John Hammond’s granddaughter Lex in that first film. She said a few words and then it was time to enter our favorite park!

The sound was really good at the venue and the whole movie was a lot of fun to watch with the crowd at The Greek. It was a fun night, and it was a great way to get pumped up for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which hits theaters next week on June 22nd. Look out here for a review of it next week!
