Let's be honest: we're all a bit nervous about the Watchmen TV show, even if it is being produced by HBO. Why is that? Because the film is largely considered just okay by some, if not a failure by many. That and Damon Lindelof is the creator behind the show, who has seen his fair share of fan outrage thanks to one of his previous projects, Lost.

Watchmen co-creator approves of “fresh” and “unexpected” HBO adaptation

Watchmen fans can all breathe a sigh of relief.

We might be able to rest a little easier after news broke yesterday that Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons approves of the show after reading a script. “I do know a little about it. I’ve had conversations with Damon, and I’ve read the screenplay for the pilot. I don’t think it’s my place to say too much about it, other than I found Damon’s approach to be really refreshing and exciting and unexpected.”

Knowing Lindelof it’s probably going to be a mystery show (likened to a puzzle box) like Lost or his recently acclaimed The Leftovers. Gibbons seemed to confirm that when he said, “I don’t think it’s gonna be what people think it’s going to be. It certainly wasn’t what I imagined it to be. I think it’s extremely fresh. I’m really looking forward to seeing it on the screen.”

There were rumors the show might tap into the Watchmen prequel comics since that added fresh stories to the already well known comic and movies. Gibbons dispelled that however when he said, “I’ve been resistant to the comic book prequels and sequels, but what Damon’s doing is not that at all, it’s very far away from that. While it’s very reverential and true to the source material (by which I mean the Watchmen graphic novel that Alan and I did), it’s not retreading the same ground, it’s not a reinterpretation of it. It approaches it in a completely unexpected way.”

A new approach to something we all know inside and out, but also love? Now that is exciting.
