You never know what you’re going to find on a con’s vendor floor. Especially at Dragon Con!
This year the unexpected gem was Monkey Minion Press, as represented by co-founder Dane Ault. Ault is a graphic designer with a biology minor, who at some point decided the art part of science was more up his alley than the nitty-gritty.
“I got tired of biology when it came down to doing statistics,” Ault says.
Now he puts his skills to use making prints, books and magnets based on the science he’s always loved, although a paleontologist friend had to suggest the dinosaur cards. Science is only a part of what Monkey Minion does, but it’s the closest to his heart.
“We do science-based and pop culture propaganda art,” Ault says. The space items sell the best, as you might expect, including the children’s books on unmanned exploration written by his wife, Ashlie Hammond, a creative copywriter. With their skills combined, Monkey Minion is a full-time job that’s a little more meaningful than Ault’s old profession of designing grocery ads.
“It’s a team effort,” Ault says.
