Call of Duty Black Ops 4: Blackout beta review

Call of Duty Black Ops 4: Blackout: Battle Royale has never looked and felt so sexy!

I have been burned out on Call of Duty for awhile now and it used to be my drug of choice when it came down to shooters. Battlefield eventually moved in and replaced it when it began to include larger maps and a larger group of people. I loved the idea of having these huge wars with 20+ people and trying to achieve objectives. When Battlefield 1 released last year, I put many hours into the game, but I am not a World War I fan, so I lost interest quicker than usual. Call of Duty put out a World War II as well and I did purchase it, but it was a waste of money for me. I regret it.

Now Battle Royale modes are all the craze. Some players are becoming burned out with them but not me! I love PUBG, I think Fortnite is ok, and when Battlefield and Call of Duty announced they were going to have their own Battle Royale mode, my ears perked up, then dread struck me as Battlefield announced that it was staying in the past with a World War II game. Call of Duty Black Ops 4 moved to the forefront because it is modern based, therefore it now had my undivided attention.

The quick equip comes in handy so much, you will wonder how you got along without it.

Last Friday the beta dropped. Due to Hurricane Florence, I had the day off and lucky for me, the storm turned, so we had some rain, but no threat of losing power. I had to pre-order the game to get the beta, so I’m stuck with COD this year, for better or worse. My best friend was off as well, so he was eagerly waiting for me to download the beta, so we could play together.

Once downloaded, we were ready to roll. Right off, I liked the presentation. You can choose who you want to invite and what mode you want from the lobby, quick and easy. It also appears you can customize your profile, but the options weren’t available at the time of the beta.

So, we drop into the map on a wingsuit! The hell with a parachute, you go all flying squirrel right onto the battlefield. The map is cool! And I mean cool! Treyarch took maps from the previous Black Ops game and inserted them into the one single map. You can drop into Estates, Hydro Dam, Firing Range, Cargo Docks, Nuketown Island, Asylum, and more!

My favorite place to drop is at the offices right beside the Hydro Dam. Hardly anyone dropped there the whole time I played this weekend and those offices had enough guns and supplies to keep me happy. Of course, I stay away from some places. Nuketown Island is a shitstorm and I jogged past the Asylum to hear screams, gunfire, and even zombies! You can toss monkeys holding cymbals to attract them from underground. My motto is “I don’t get involved with Asylum politics.”

He might be able to vape, but he couldn’t hide worth a damn

Blackout has a nice assortment of weapons and I absolutely dig the inventory system. You can carry two guns. This includes pistols, but the pistols are decent enough that if that is all you can find, you are capable of handling situations if they get rough. But obviously, you want a machine gun. You can get a backpack and it holds weapon attachments, grenades, and even perks that help give you a tactical advantage. Don’t want to search a bunch of buildings and come up with garbage for loot? Use the Looter perk and all the items are now visible to you through the walls. Want to stay silent for a couple of minutes? Dead Silence perk is your answer. You get the drift.

One aspect that I liked and wish PUBG would do is keep the ammo separate out of your backpack. In Blackout, you can carry a set amount of all types of ammo. This comes in handy if you run out of ammo and must grab a gun on the fly. The guns are solid. I have my favorites already, I like the Maddox and the Spitfire. I had a hard time with the sniper rifles, but I saw some cats that were already taking down people like they have been doing it their whole life. So, if the rifle is your flavor, you should be all good here. If you are lucky you will come across a fully kitted weapon, all attachments included, and you are ready to rock.

As with every Battle Royale game, there is your standard set of rules. You land in the circle; the circle gets smaller and smaller forcing other players to interact and eliminate each other. COD is no different and has the supply drops from airplanes included as well. I never got close to a crate, so I can’t tell you exactly what is in them. I could google it and tell you, but I want to be surprised when I first get one. I am sure it is a fully kitted weapon, some meds, and level 3 armor, but I’ll find out when I get one.

Healing! Let’s talk about healing. In Blackout, you can run and heal! Say what? Yes, you no longer have to guess a safe distance and hide behind a tree with your ass puckered hoping that someone isn’t going to come up on you and finish what they started. Heal on the fly and keep your gun ready. That took some getting used to since I am used to stopping to heal. A very nice alteration from Treyarch, thank you!

Dead to rights!

The battles are fair from what I saw. I hardly yelled “that’s bullshit!” like I have done with so many COD games in the past. And since this is the beta, I think that is saying something. An armor symbol will flash if you shoot someone and they are equipped with armor. Another nice feature because then you know what you are dealing with. Once you eliminate someone, they leave behind their duffle bag, so you can loot through it and take what you want.

There are vehicles to maneuver about the map. There is a large truck that is slow and loud as hell, but can take a lot of damage. The ATV is quick and quiet, but you have no armor. There is also a helicopter but getting in that felt like suicide, in fact it led to a suicide/murder as my friend believed he could land it at top speed. No, you cannot land the helicopter at top speed. So, don’t try it. I am sure he has a different version of this story.

Overall, I was more than thrilled with COD Blackout beta. I am looking forward to the game’s release next month. I played well, My K/D was at 1.68 when I was done. I won a couple of duos and a couple of solo games, one without a kill! My buddy gave me hell for that and called me a camper. I didn’t encounter anyone until the final five and they sorted themselves out for me. It was me and the last guy and I started shooting at him and he ran backwards into the circle and died. I am guessing he had zero health. But hey! A win is a win, right?  Right? I suck.

No kills and a victory! Do I suck? You make the call!

If you are a COD fan, then you probably had this preordered way before me. If you are on the fence or have been burned on COD like me, then I say give this one a chance. I had a lot of fun with the beta. And I have to remind myself, this was just the battle royal mode. I still have the campaign, ( I won’t play. I really won’t.) multiplayer, and zombies! I am looking forward to Call of Duty Black Ops 4 when it releases on October 12th.
